I've always liked Fairport since first hearing them in the late 60's - however the current lineup I have no time for whatsoever.

A few years ago they were booked to play a folk festival in North Yorkshire, one that had been fairly low key, but had been running for a few years, however that year wasn't as successful as the promoter had hoped, and Faiport insisted they be paid the full fee, money the promoter didn't have. The festival never ran again.

I won't pretend that the current line-up are musically as great as some previous incarnations, but that's a bit harsh. Fairport have worked hard over the years, but have never had that much to show for it financially. Like you and I they have mortgages to pay, a fairly well publicised divorce settlement (And I bet their pension provision isn't too hot). I happen to know how much they do in terms of charity gigs etc. that isn't so well publicised. Plus, do you think their driver/soundman, equipment hire, whatever, would have waived their fee?? It's not like they hiked their fee up at the last minute...I have sympathy for the promoter, but that's the risk of being a promoter. We have similar risks running a Silent Comedy festival down here...but we wouldn't try to back out on a deal.

Did you hear them live in the 60's? If so, I envy you deeply.

The Who are the final word in Rock music, simply the finest band in History. At their peek 1969 - 76, absolutely untouchable. Prodigious musicianship from Townshend, Entwistle and Moon, and Power vocals from Daltrey.

Daltry can't sing.
Townsend had unique style
Entwistle amazing bass guitarist
Moon was the only one you looked at on stage.
Saw them many times live in the early days. Once at the Loyola when Townsend strolled up the road past the line up carrying two Rickenbackers

The Birds were one of the most underated bands. They would have gone on to huge things if it wasn't for crap management and shite record companies.

Don't know what happened to Tony Munroe. Kim Gardner formed Ashton Gardner Dyke (Ressurection Shuffle) Kim had a bar in Los Angeles but died a couple of years ago. Pete the drummer dissapeared off the face of the earth. None of the band ever heard from him again.
Ali the singer was approached by many of the top heavy groups of the time, but he put his family first and stopped singing.
I met him a couple of years ago. By coincidence he was getting up and doing a few numbers with a mate of mines band.
He kindly gave me some memorabilia of the Birds.

Since all this talk of The Birds I've made a point of checking out some of their music.
They sound very much like the early Stones and The Yardbirds.
I agree that with a few more breaks in their day the band could have become very popular.
