ITN have apparantly looked into Sir Geoff Hurst's final goal at the 1966 with great depth (used computer imagery etc) and have declared it was NOT a goal after all. Well,I am no expert on these matters,so I turn to my fellow webstars for advice. Even if it wasn't a goal,we would have still won on 3-2 surely?
They are now looking into the Battle of Agincourt, claiming our victory was pure spin by one W. Shakespeare .

I am not an avid football supporter, but come on this is a global football extravaganza held every 4 years, it would be nice to see England do well. No doubt there will be the usual moans that accompany the tournament of it monopolising the screen. But I never hear moans when every year we get Wimbledon coverage on both BBC1 & BBC2 when foreign tennis stars fill up the screen for a full fortnight in June. So come on support england. It des not matter what DNA is in your makeup we are all mongrels.

It's nothing to do with my DNA or the mix of blood. I just don't like organised sport as entertainment.
All sport, any sport (well very nearly any) just leaves me cold. I can't see the point.
I certainly can't see any reason to get excited about it.

As a Welshman I am doing the usual "C'mon England's opponents" bit! However, now have a bit more interest in a major sporting event which Wales usually fail to qualify for...Dennis Lawrence of T & T plays for the team I support, Wrexham.
As a fan of a League 2 team you do not expect to see one of your players at the WC!

I am also hoping Adrian Chiles gets a fair crack of the presenting whip...a bloke who says what he sees.

I'm certainly hoping for an England win - it might stop the tiresome, and pathetic, ranting on about 1966. It was 40 years ago for goodness sake! That's longer than most fans have been alive. Move on. Get a life.

Oh dear, now I'M ranting.

Sorry.

Have you noticed how none of the merchandise (at least none I have seen) has promoted the tournament in the traditional manner, as 'Germany '06'. Remember Italia '90 and Mexico '70.

I am dreading the world cup as I lve in Croydon. Some of you will recall the neanderthals taking to the streets during France 2004 Euro Championship.

Come on, where's the English pride and spirit?
Three lions on the chest ect..
Sure we've had 40 years of hurt, all the more reason to pray for another England team being World Champions.
We're coached by a Swede with a turnip as assistant but we can claim world class players such as Crouch, Hargreaves and Neville.
Funny how players like Gerrard, Lampard and Ferdinand star for their clubs but never seem to really shine under Sven. His game plan leaves a lot to be desired.
I still think England have a chance of winning the World Cup even without Rooney. Yet, as a long term, war torn and punchy England supporter I can't help thinking that we'll be let down again.
Let's hope the final result doesn't depend on another penalty shoot out !!

The only part of this World Cup I'm not looking forward to is the late nights and early mornings we football fans in Australia have to endure to watch the live matches, due to the dreadful time differences.

By the way, do you think that the UK government should announce a public holiday if England win the cup?

"Come On You White's"

I agree,Alan - considering the fact they have not picked up any silver since. When the England Rugby team won the World Cup in 2003,all you got from football fans "Well,it isn't the proper World Cup". It doesn't matter what World Cup it is,if a person loves coarse angling and they have won that sport's World Cup,that means as much to them in their hands as does the Jules Rimet one in Beckham's hands.
Anyway, after last night's performance in their friendly with Hungary, despite a 3-1 win,my hopes are fading.
In my opinion,Beckham wants replacing as captain and Gerrard installed instead.
By the way,I am number 99 seed for the making of a Chinese Junk in Origami World Cup

I'm amazed by how many England World Cup Anthems there are available this year.
Embrace have the uninspiring official version but there are also current releases from -
Tony Christie
Jim Pursey
Joe Fagin
The England Boys
The Team
Infernal
Geoff Hurst and Frank Bruno.

What no Baddiel and Skinner?

Does anyone have a particular favourite amongst that lot?

Dave.

Unlike cricket or rugby where only about 6 nations play the game (with good reason
Football really is an international sport so the competition is far greater and therefore the chances of actually being victorious slim. In fact many nations rarely even qualify for the tournament . I'm quite happy for '66 to keep being dragged up though.

First bit of news on today's lunchtime ITN bulletin is that today is the day we learn the fate of Mickey Rooney's lad in the World Cup Finals. So,correct me if I am wrong - but if he fails the physical test, this one man, this one player out of eleven or so more, then England has no chance in the tournament. God help us .

World Cup 98 was memorable because I had a Citroen XM parked on the street and on the night France won the final some b*****d kicked my door mirror off the car which cost me £120 to replace!

This year the opening England game is on a Saturday afternoon and it's also beach weather! Do I wander down the beach early with Boris (she doesn't like going alone in case she gets chatted up by a wierdo (he'd have to be a bloody wierdo)) then come back early to watch the game, or do the honourable thing and listen to it on the radio from the beach? Or take my laptop to the beach and look a complete nerd with my Freecom box plugged in the USB with a black cloak over my head so I can see the screen? Or dig out that old Benkson 8" black and white portable telly from the loft and buy some new batteries and take that?

I think I'll pray for rain!
