I was born in March 1965, so I'd have been just over a year old when England won the World Cup. Presumably, I was in the house my family lived in at the time.

Even though I'm not a sporty person, and I don't follow football, I'm getting caught up in it all. It is a bit infectious....

Harry's boys done good - considering they'd just come back from Stamford Bridge where they beat up the Viking Chelsea supporters.

That's 1966, not 1066....

I ask you.

I'm a little hazy as to whether i saw it on TV. We didn't have a TV and I'm not sure anyone in our street had one. Of course I had the PG Tips Booklet to fill in ( which is now worth 4p on EBay) and can just about remember the song...

"Red, White and Blueeeee....
World Cup Willy
We all love him tooooooo....
World Cup Willy "

( A cut above a later effort )

" We're on our way
We are Ron's Twenty Two! "

A slight tangent - When Apollo 11 landed I have ( seemingly ) clear memories of sitting in a Classroom on a sunny day watching Neil Armstrong on TV. Subsequently I have been told that it was nighttime here when the TV Pictures were shown. Anyone know for sure?

They landed at 20:17 GMT so it wouldn't have been dark, or not very dark, but would you have still been in a classroom that late? Aldrin did his "One small step" 6 hours later at 02:56 on July 21st.

I was at Wembley together with two friends that day, we bought tickets from a tout a few days before. Being a big Football fan, that July World Cup was one of the best ever, I saw every England game at Wembley and even went to the first night of Goal at the Columbia Cinema in Shaftesbury Avenue. Some, if not all of the players were in the audience.

The England Manager Alf Ramsey was a very quiet man, hated the Press, and certainly wasn't a man to shout his mouth off, in fact very much the opposite. When he was appointed in 1963 he stated "that England will win the 1966 World Cup", and then proceeded to lose his first game 5-2 to France in Paris.

On the night of the semi final when England beat Portugal 2-1 to reach the Final, all I could hear ringing in my ears were those words of soon to be, Sir Alf. Having watched England continually fail at major tournaments, still their only ever major trophy win, there was a giant lump in my throat that for the first time maybe, England were going to do something very special.

It was a great day, and as I lived very near the Team hotel, that early evening we followed the Team coach to the Royal Garden Hotel where the official banquet was. The street scenes through London were unforgettable, people cheering all the way, waving flags, hanging out of windows, it must have been like VE day. We parked near the hotel and happened to be walking next to a very well known BBC sports presenter of the time who got us into the Hotel and later we got to see the Team close up. It was an amazing moment in my life never ever to be forgotten, makes me feel emotional now 40 years later just thinking about it.

England, Champions of the World! Fantastic!!

I was about three years old when the World Cup was going on in England, and the Koreans were playing against Portugal at Ayresome Park,Middlesbrough. My mam and dad took me to one of the pleasure parks in Middlesbrough, and I remember kicking a football with them.

What a great day you must have had. I bet you didn't think it would be 40 years (or longer) before they'd win again!

I spent the Summer of 1966 relaxing (I've spent a good deal of my life relaxing!) after doing my A levels before going on to college.
I much regret missing the opportunity to go and see live some of the great actors and actresses (Donald Wolfit, Dennis Price, Flora Robson etc.) who were still treading the boards at that time, not to mention some of the great older musicians who were still performing such as Wilhelm Backhaus. If only I knew then what I know now!

I was eight years old and watched the final at home on the black and white tv. But my highlight of that time was going to watch the Sound of Music at the Gaumont cinema in Manchester with my mother and brother and when we came out to get the bus home we saw the Portugese team including Eusebio strolling through Albert square and I got his autograph.
