She won't be taking up nursing then when she falls of the celebrity alphabet list.
Perhaps we should invent a 27th letter especially for them. How about ?

What did she expect it to do....turn somersaults or break into a rousing chorus of "Swanee"?

I've heard of four names on that list.

I'm intrigued to hear mention of Dirk Benedict for the first time since I can remember. I very much wish it had been for some other reason.

I'd like to think that my reservations - on the grounds that I don't watch reality shows - are purely academic. Unfortunately, it's impossible to either switch on a radio, read a midly sensible newspaper or walk into the works canteen without being exposed to some sort of report on such things.

Stick to radio 4, don't read newspapers, stay away from canteen gossip

Steve
I'm beginning to realise that there is much wisdom in your words!!

Seriously, I really am considering the Radio 4 route. I was a regular until about 15 years ago when I seemed to convert to a mix of Radio 2 and the local station. As well as the usual afternoon plays and Book At Bedtime narratives, I seem to recall that R4 used to do some rather good seasonal plays - the Crime At Christmas was a favourite of mine circa 1988.

I'm starting to go off topic.... given me thoughts for a new thread elsewhere!

A short play or readings every day. Documentaries and a medium dose of reliable news & current affairs. The testing ground for new comedy - not always successful but it did give us the likes of Little Britain, Goodness Gracious Me, The League of Gentlemen, The Mighty Boosh and many others that moved to TV.
Also the home of just some of the most delightful, quirkiest radio you'll ever hear. Little pieces that don't fit in to any genre are liable to be heard on Radio 4. Plus the world's longest running radio soap opera, The Archers.

I have watched this thread with mouth agog at the reality of Ken Russell et al, then it's finally sunk in that this apparently IS happening. Oh no. I can't stand the whole Big Brother TV concept, and now, if this has any success, the USA market will soon follow. And while I won't watch it, it will be pounded into every commercial orifice the TV marketers can locate and/or create. Gag.

Anyone with a spare petard? I have the hoist already.

Well I was sucked in by the controversy tonight and CH4 must be quietly delighted by the exposure. I think Shilpa had it right when wondering what sort of country this is; she's had first-hand experience of chav culture and a nation that celebrates (or did, career suicide now) the stupidity of Jade Goody. What are horrid bunch those three girls are. (tho it did appear the penny was dropping with one)

Saw a report today suggesting Ken (and Donny) might be returning but somehow I doubt they're daft enough to enter the madhouse again.

I despair - like you, I can hardly believe that this inane drivel is allowed to pollute our screens.

The only time I have seen any of it was when it made the BBC News and they showed some of the so-called "celebrities" - none of whom I knew or recognised.

Abe didn't have it quite right - it certainly looks as if you can fool most of the people most of the time.

A plague on all their houses.

All the best

I think if you re-read Abe - he had it spot on.......

Each series of Big Brother has had one or two sublime moments. Most of it is tedium broken by slapstick but there are often key moments, some 'romantic', some 'dramatic'. The current one falls in the dramatic category.

The name of the game for 'drama' is to generate an 'emotional' reaction in the audience isn't it?. I don't see Big Brother as necessarily any more polluting than much current TV or film drama, which often seems to require violence, screaming language, general blood-letting, cruelty and deviancy of a troubling degree.

Oh, I agree - but it would have been great if he'd used "most"!

Well, I could spend my time watching an infinite number of monkeys typing on an infinite number of typewriters in the vain hope that they'd produce Shakespeare - but I've better things to do with my time.

Probably explains why I watch virtually nothing that thinks it's new in the way of drama on the moving wallpaper.

All the best

One of the problems of having an infinite amount of scheduling to fill seems to be the consequent necessity to implement the monkey method.......... :

What does Big Brother mean to me?. In the words of a great writer from the mouth of a real celebrity "Frankly, my dear, I dont give a damn".

But! what if you could put old British stars, writers, directors ect. Who would you like to see?.

Indeed!

I've just been listening to the BBC's DG using politician-speak to say "Tough - you'll have to get used to the drivel."
