There seems to be a lot of videos in Charity shops lately because everyone is getting rid of their collections to buy dvds, my recent bargains were the box set of Hammer House of horror 6 euro and Morgan a Suitable case for Treatment for 1 euro a film I have never seen.

I'm hanging on to my videos because I can't see the point of duplicating the films on DVD just to satisfy the marketing machine. A few years ago I started duplicating my LPs with CDs and stopped because I prefer the sound of the original vinyl! So IMHO technology isn't all that it's cracked up to be, and I prefer to do my own thing rather than keep up! This does limit my enjoyment sometimes when I'm out in the car listening to the same album over and over again on eight-track!

One thing I noticed at the car boot sale (we went to a posh one but they didn't call it a car boot sale, it was a 4x4 Tailgate Jamboree), was the many 12 " laser discs for sale.

Were these laser film discs any good and can you still buy the equipment to play them on? Are they worth collecting or if I bought a load would they languish in the back of the shed forever and a day alongside my Andrew and Fergie Royal Wedding memorobilia and the Gary Glitter and Jonathan King boxed album sets!

Some stuff on LD has a better print quality than certain DVD releases. FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE (for one) is so reputed and I know that up until only last month, when the HD version came out, a lot of the prints used to master THE PRISONER LDs were superior.

That being said, these discs are bulky and you often had the film split over 2 sides - even if you had the better quality of player, there was still a heck of a switchover gap. Mind you, I still have 100 or so discs stashed away, and a decent player still in tow...

I think I'll pass on the Laser Discs. I'll probably get them mixed up with my LPs and ruin my stylus on the record deck!

Yes, there is some good stuff coming out of the woodwork now everyone is dumping videotape - worth a regular trawl of the charity shops. There's still a lot of material that was issued on video but has never made it to DVD (yet). Just picked up the two tapes of Murder Most Horrid, as new - 99p each and the other week The Young Person's Guide to Becoming a Rock Star double video set for 50p!

Has anyone ever started a list on here of movies/TV that has been issued on video but not on DVD? It would be a handy reference!

That won't do them much good. I find a lens cleaning cloth does a very good job when necessary

Does anyone on the forum visit charity shops. When I worked in the outskirts of Cardiff I was always in Oxfam or Sue Rider shops sifting through old vinyl albums, came across some good buys.

I have never been so lucky with books in charity shops accept when I stumbled upon a collection of Edgar Allen Poe stories and a collection of obituaries from the Daily Telgaraph.

I always make a point of going to charity shops first when I want a mainstream paperback. That way they get some dosh, its greener and I get a bargain. Everyone wins.

I am fortunate to live close to a cluster of high-end thrift stores. Every Monday I make a usual trip down and generally come back with at least one tape. I contribute all my tapes that I am finished watching to the animal-rescue thrift--they are swiftly sold--at a bargain--one dollar! Over the last year I've given away hundreds but still accumulate them.

I began going to thrifts 30 years ago--but when I lived in San Francisco, I would never have dreamed of going into one. When I returned to Phoenix I decided that all the Lincolns and Cadillacs parked outside the thrifts weren't just for the people volunteering their time there. You can find anything, if you have the patience.

For example, although I had no use for it, someone had given a pristine Rolls-Royce grill to one--minus the Spirit of Ectasy, unfortuantely.

Ditto. 90% of my book collection came from charity shops or charity book sales (Amnesty holds regular, excellent book sales in London). They're also great for videos: three videos for 99p at my local Oxfam! I recently picked up Fassbinder's Lili Marleen on VHS
