name='Fellwanderer']Really? Must have taken a long time to get south. There was snow in the Lakes a week ago. Earliest we've had it here is 15 October - but not this year.

Well, if you will live up in the frozen wastes ...

Wouldnt be at all surprised if we get snow here in Merthyr Tydfil, we are quite high up on our estate two miles from the town itself.

Bloody weather my wife and I were in Castle Howard this time last week the weather was beauftiful there.

It's a question of geography really. The Highlands of Scotland would normally have snow before England. Similarly the higher areas of Norway would normally receive snow before Scotland

Indeed - that was my point. People further south seem to think the weather only ever happens down there. For the first few years I lived in the NE it amazed me at how bad all the winters appeared to be down in the south as they were always more severe up here than any I experienced in the south.

Perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned getting to Brackenclose in Wasdale in another thread as I've just had a phone call to say the bridge is damaged and there is no vehicular access

name='Lord Brett']I take it you're not based in California, then - or has TV given us a false picture of the weather over there?

No, not California, but Washington State. More or less the same latitude as UK.

We had a major cold front a few weeks ago, now it's warm again, like an Indian Summer.

There's no snow season down here but we had a freak snowstorm a few years ago, got half an inch of snow on the ground. It does snow in the Catalina mountains though, behind my apartment.

Ah, that makes sense. I once spent two weeks in Seattle, and the weather felt very English. Lovely city.

No junk mail this morning. Only a letter from the building society informing us that our repayments have been reduced

Call me Stone - they had a job getting blood out from me. Got my tea and biscuits and a thank you for turning up. That's forty pints logged, and I will have to try again in a couple of weeks.

Especially when it's cold I make sure I always walk a reasonable distance before going. If I drive to the town where it's being held I park at the other end of town from the donor session.

I don't drink tea or coffee on the day of a donation, or not before doaning. But I do drink something like orange squash to make sure I have plenty of fluids in there.

I don't know how much of all of that really makes much of a difference, but it works for me. I've had a few "did not bleed" sessions over the years, but not many.

Keep up the good work. I've got my gold card and badge for the 50 donations and it's something I'm very proud of doing. I doubt if I'll make it to the dimond award for 100 whole blood donations but I think I should just get the emerald award for 75 before they retire me

The last time I gave blood,I did walk from Billingham to Norton and back. I don't use the car as the streets around the blood donating place are very tight and car parking is a joke. So today I got a Day Tripper, went into Stockton for inspiration for Christmas presents, and went back to Norton.

I had coffee and Weetabix and a banana for breakfast. So there is a healthy start to the day.
