name='Steve Crook']Not in my supermarket. Flour and lemon juice are all together in the "home baking" section - Lemon sponge anyone?

Eggs aren't on the same shelf, they're on the one next to the home baking section

    Steve
In my Sainsburys, lemon juice is with all the flavourings, whereas plain flour is in with all of all the flour; same section of the supermarket (Home Baking) - but different shelves, although possibly the same aisle.

....and eggs are in a different aisle in ALL supermarkets.

Those three items would not be side by side under normal circumstances.

    Trust me - I'm a home baker!

Our Sainsburys must be an unusual one then.

Not all supermarkets are the same. Not all branches of the same chain are the same

We've got a VERY big one and a little one.

Be honest; where would you see flour, eggs and lemon juice SIDE BY SIDE ON THE SAME SHELF unless pancakes were being promoted?

Photographs of all three in the supermarket in the same frame please!

Marks and Spencers used to be quite sensible and seemed to deliberately avoid this - which I really liked. But that seems to have gone to the wall and in the last couple of years they have taken a similiar approach. Christmas calenders already out alongside Halloween.

I don't think it is chiefly the rampant consumerism that people are upset about either...it's the affect it has on our 'yearly clock'.... We are so lucky here to have seasonal weather and all the different sensations and changing ambience that goes along with that throughout the year. It's kind of an assault on the senses when they do this.

I suppose they do it to give people more of a chance and avoid panic buying in December, which is awful isn't it..but I'd have far more respect for them if they held out for a bit..

To quote Torquil MacNeil from I Know Where I'm Going, "I have a small one"

I didn't say that all three were side by side on the same shelf.

I said that the flour and lemon juice were in the home baking section and the eggs were further along the same aisle

    I remember that one!

    I haven't finished yet either..............

It's true that you didn't use the words, "side by side", but you did say:

Most shops would put flour & lemon juice, along with all the other "home baking" ingredients, together on the same shelves.
....and now you have changed that to 'the same aisle' - proving that I was right all along.

PS: Lemon juice/old lemons are wonderful for dissolving limescale.

    I didn't change nuffink

A shelf can run the length of an aisle. A shelf, or an aisle, can have totally unrelated things on it

As I said some time back, different supermarkets (or different branches of the same chain) can display things in different ways.

In yours they might all be some way away from each other, in mine they're all quite close together.

    Steve
I'm not sure I want to know how close together yours are but, as all things are relative, it probably has a bearing on the fact that you have a small one. The distance between mine is my own business.

Safe in the knowledge that I came out on top, I'm going to confuse you all further:

....if only they'd made them in Elvis's day!

    Bon appetit!

Pardon my ignorance, but what is pancake day?

As for stores jumping the gun on various holidays, it's the same in the States. There are stores with Christmas goods out already. When I was a kid, we never saw a Christmas display until the day after our Thanksgiving holiday which is the last Thurday in November. That was always the "offcial" start of the Christmas season.

It really got bad earlier this year. Most schools let out for summer break on the third Friday in June. This year, some of the major chains like Wal-Mart had their "back-to-school" displays up the next day.

We have the same problem with stores and Christmas over here!

When I was in Florida at the end of November in 1989, the Christmas decorations magically appeared overnight in Disneyworld on 1st December - even though Mickey's Christmas Shop is open all year.

Pancake Day is also known as Shrove Tuesday. If you 'click' on the link it'll take you to the page at Wikipedia which explains it.

Our pancakes are not like yours in the States. They are similar to French crepes; thinner and larger and, traditionally, we sprinkle them with caster sugar and lemon juice and roll them up before eating them.

When you say "a big omo", may I first ask if you are in the habit of dropping your aitches?

If not, you need the Laundry section.
