name='DB7']Her daughter had been on the social services 'at risk' list and I suspect the press' reaction to Madeleine McCann (The Sun gave Matthews 50k) gave her the inspiration. I'm not excusing her behaviour, but I do think it was avoidable. There are also issues of certain members of society getting back into employment.

Why do you have to always spoil a good witch-hunt with your balanced liberal attitudes?

She deserves to be horse-whipped on the National Lottery show and then hanged. Each and every right-thinking man, woman and child in Britain could then take turns at dancing on her grave! Her and everybody else who ever breaks the law ever. Ever. Which, of course would be practically all of us. Except me.

Yup, there was far too much negative publicity concering poor Madeleine's disappearance, making her parents and neighbour suspects has not helped things one little bit, but they're still holding out a glimmer of hope, as I'm sure we all are

The Sun is a horrible newspaper, they may think they're caring, ie;'the paper that supports our boys' etc; but they soon put the boot in when someones down

name='Mark O']I'd say she was a bad person, doping the poor girl and all the rest, Karen had a home, Rent all paid for courtesy of we taxpayers and plenty of other benefits with plenty left over for booze, fags, and even porn I believe

I had my suspicions about her when I saw her on television - when the hunt for Shannon was still on - bringing home cases of lager. Daughter is missing, feared kidnapped, even - thankfully this never was the case - murdered, and your bringing home cases of lager.

Mercifully Shannon is now in a decent home with a decent upbringing.

I do think there are two separate issues, firstly the protection of her daughter who had seemingly been fed various sedatives for a year or more. One of the positives is that Shannon survived whereas other children this year have died tortuous deaths despite warning signs written ten feet tall.

Karen Matthews was clearly an unfit mother, but I suspect that when she heard reports of the Maddie Fund hitting £1m a little lightbulb lit above her head - iirc correctly Matthews did request money from the McCann's. I can understand the desire for publicity, but will UK press reports have great influence in Portugal and is there a point when it becomes counter-productive with the police having to follow leads from cranks.

Actually I give little thought to what befalls Matthews and only hope her children are afforded a better upbringing with a loving family.

name='byebyebadman']capital punishment should only be used on persistent peodophiles, a murderer can be rehabilitated but these people could never be trusted again so whats the point in keeping them alive?

There has never been a death penalty for paedophiles in this country, there never will unless we are under sharia law.

One fact thats often overlooked is the way in which these people get into their victims heads, its hard enough for them to come forward and testify when they know it means their abuser will face prison, if they knew they faced death, less would come forward.

I have been interested in and studied the death penalty for many years, in fact since I was a small child when we still had a death penalty here.

The death penalty never acted as a deterrent to crimes that are committed in the heat of the moment, but to premeditated crimes I believe it did.

Unlike America, the death penalty was dispensed without favour, no matter how much money or influence your family had, if you murdered you faced the ultimate penalty here.

For most of my years I have been against it being re introduced, due to misscarriages in the past that have seen innocents hang.

Even today with DNA testing, its still not a science thats 100% accurate, but there are cases that are clear cut, with good eye witness's or where the crime itself is recorded on cctv.

I honestly think we need to scare criminals, they need a punishment they are frightened off, and I believe once a couple of them have been hung it may make them think twice.

I am now in favour of its re introduction in cases where there is clear cut, factually proved guilt, but only if they use the old system of execution and appeals.

If they are going to try and replace the noose with lethal injection and a long appeals process then I would object strongly as its a slow and painful method, and a long appeals process is just plain cruel.

So yes, if its 30 days for appeal then hang them
