Ah- there's the rub your Dameness. Everyone has done an about turn and gone too soft.
As far as the Human Rights act is concerned, tell that to the families who's loved one are now 6 feet under because their Human Rights were taken away. Of course if we hadn't signed up to the Human rights legislation, we could then set about putting our house in order but unfortunately there are far too many do gooders in this world who haven't experienced death by a violent nature. To them they're just pictures on TV that bear no realism to their simplistic lives.

I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.

And there, earl, is where we do agree!

We need to build more prisons (with less comforts) and we need to start building Borstals again where kids can complete their education and learn self-respect, respect for others and their possessions and a trade.

In fact, the prisoners could do the building themselves!

I've become quite puzzled by the lack of prison space which features so much on news programmes and on debates about dealing with crime.

On my sojourns around the UK I notice a lot of "mothballed" military camps. Surely they could be converted reasonably quickly to accommodate the rising tide of felons?

Not all prisons need to be in pleasant areas with broadband access, sports facilities etc?

If I wasn't meant to drive that fast, the pedal would stop half way!!

We certainly agree on all your points your Dameness. May I add their parents should also be part of the re-education process where they can learn self-respect, respect for others and above all GOOD PARENTING. I rest my case M'Lud.

Sadly, many wouldn't agree with you - but I do.

They're not ... many of them are decrepit dumps you wouldn't keep a dog in.

Don't miss out on a chance to win a rare film in Bat-Quiz 13 closing date - 31/8/8.

No problem there then....................but many are not. One, near where I live is for longer term prisoners and is in open countryside and there are many other similar examples.

To return to my earlier point there seems to be ample opportunity to convert redundant military facilties into secure prisons without the need to install what amounts to mini sports/entertainment complexes within.

If I wasn't meant to drive that fast, the pedal would stop half way!!

Bring back Conscription!

A few tours around some of the nasty places around the world would do them good, or would that be against their human rights as it might scare the "little ones"?

all this talk of new laws for this and that ,we already have laws for those types of crimes ,such as carrying an offensive weapon ,threatening behaviour etc etc .they dont bother enforcing those so why do you think theyll enforce new ones ? i dont think that criminal types have changed much over the years ,the people we depend on to keep order though ,have changed !

That's why those laws should be updated, the penalty isn't harsh enough but the charge of attempted murder raises it to a new level - and I commit this proposal to the house S/FX hear, hear !!!!!

I once carried a knife in the 80s. I'd twice had holy crap kicked out of me coming back on the train from the football so lifted an army knife of my brother's to protect myself. Think I only carried it a few times, and thankfully the subsequent treks passed off incident free. In hindsight I doubt I'd have used it and there would have been a fair chance of my frontin' backfiring.

But I can understand why many teens do carry a blade for protection.

when a particular crime became fashionable ,such as hi jacking a lorry or whatever ,it used to come to a point where someone convicted of that offence would recieve a harsh sentance in order to nip the new crime craze in the bud .how many teenagers have been stabbed by other teenagers just lately ? the louts convicted of killing gary newlove are already appealing against their sentance ,theyll be out in a few years .nobody seems to take responsibility for anything anymore .......i may of course be talking utter twaddle again

On re-reading many of these posts, it struck me how in the background lurks the 24 hour licencing laws introduced last year by the government; the same government who, via their most recent budget, made an ecstasy tablet cheaper than a pint of beer

I don't object to them trying to cultivate a more moderate European approach to drinking, but now that it's failed they should have the nerve to reassess the current licensing laws and its contribution to teen binge drinking.
