well i wouldnt appreciate someone throwing a concrete block off a motorway bridge to see what kind of bounce it made off my lorry ! the sentance they got would be right if thats all that they had done was to cause damage to the wagon and disrupted the early morning traffic .as i said earlier on if you hurl a concrete block off a motorway bridge you know its likely to kill someone if it hits a car ,lorry etc

Boy Scouts with jack knives should be issued with them at each meeting and not taken home, likewise modern pentathlon trainees have guns issued under license at the place of training. It would be interesting to know how many boy scouts have been charged with assault involving a deadly weapon.

The Authorities don't always get it right, but collectively they have enough experience to be able to meter out punishment for crimes like these, even though it may be perceived by the public as disproportinate.
These boys seemingly had nothing better to do than act in an anti-social manner which eventualy lead to the death of this lorry driver. Theirs was wicked mischief which turned horribly wrong. They certainly didn't go out with the intention of killing a fellow human being.
Same could be said for the youths who attacked and killed both Sophie Lancaster and Gary Newlove, even though I believe in these two instances there was a latent intent to harm.
Ultimately crimes like these are interpreted as 'heat of the moment' and therefore the assailants are not considered to be cold and calculating individuals and given their relatively young age they often get the benefit of the doubt by those who judge.
The problem is that crimes like these are rife and quite commonplace, thus less of an issue than their equivalents were thirty years ago as Jackdaw has pointed out.
What the hell can we do?
In Finland they have a policy of identifying and cracking down on those who display anti-social tenedencies,and it is done collectively at home and at school.
In the UK we act after the event when it is too late.
Whilst we have a much larger population than Finland, it may not be quite as easy to adopt such clinical methods(which incidentally work) but we have to start somewhere to combat such behavioral patterns.

I'm the first to admit that I am very 'out of touch' but, seeing as we are calling these two 'BOYS' and treating them as 'MINORS', what the bloody hell were they doing out on the streets unaccompanied by an adult at that time of the morning anyway?

I was still picking mine up from parties etc. until he left home (in his early 20s); I thought it was all part of being a parent.

A common theme which runs through society today is that some people across the spectrum do not think of the consequences of their actions. That applies to politicians, management, civil service etc, as well as children and younger adults.
If you send an army ill equipped there will be unneccessary casualties, if you lend money to people who can't pay it back you will lose money, if you create systems which are complicated or excessive they will break down, it isn't computers which cause cock ups, it's the bosses behind them.

Life should be like driving, you look at the road ahead and take action if you can forsee any problems or your gut says so. You don't wait for things to happen.

The more I travel around the world the more I realise that we're in serious trouble in the UK. I was in Majorca last week and staying in a tiny resort where not many Brits go (not enough burger and chips joints and no karaoke bars) and the only time I came across British was when a hired boat pulled up, and the six or seven fat white Ingerlish male occupants proceeded to show off their tribal instincts and behave like idiots (and this was ten in the morning).

The people around collectively sighed as if to say "Oh no, not the English!" as the party disembarked noisily to display their total lack of respect and manners as they farted and belched their way to the nearest bar, making animal like grunts and vocal noises and saying boring and corny things like "Don't mention the war!"."

Although a rather petty example of why we are the most hated race in the known universe, I cringed with embarassment and wondered how we ever came to this.

I used to think that we should stand up and fight to get our country back on track, but now I'm not even bothered any more. I will probably move to France or Spain like many others, and leave the UK to its own devices.

The disease has spread too quickly to cure now, and what started out as a few boils on the backside has now turned into a pus filled tumour that cannot be cut out without killing the patient. You could blame the government, but lack of parental control has been around since the 70s so subsequent generations have failed to train, educate or instill any sort of discipline or self-respect in their offspring, and the delinquents of the 60s and 70s are now the grandparents of the lawless tossers we have to put up with today.
