It's looking very likely that Laura Wade's play Posh about a Bullingdon type university club, that was a big hit at the Royal Court Theatre in 2010 will at last be coming to the West End in May at the Duke of Yorks Theatre apparently an official announcement is imminent.

The play is fab and I would recommend it to you if you are within travelling distance of the West End.

Have Dave and Boris seen seen it?

Because I'm hard-core, I've booked for Richard III in Mandarin and and Hamlet in Lithuanian, part of the Globe's 37 Shakespeare's in 37 languages project. Anyone else seeing any? We decided we wanted to see plays we knew well (because we're not that brave) but not in languages we knew any of because that would be against the spirit of thing) which ruled out Much Ado in French, sadly.

Bette and Joan with Greta Scacchi and Anita Dobson is touring at the moment and I saw it in Guildford last night (better late than never). It's an entertaining two hander and both actresses are revelations as Davis and Crawford - who knew they could do it? Dobson shows us what a controlled, damaged person Crawford clearly was - she and Davis could never have got on, as, although damaged in her own way, Davis was just the opposite, spontaneous and feisty. Scacchi isn't afraid to play unattractive and gamely spends some time in her just her underwear. For someone who was known as a great beauty in her youth, it was very brave. It was the first night last night and she did need a prompt at one point, but carried on with an excellent performance. Brian May is the "Musical Director" of this production, but apart from two Country songs being played on a radio, I don't remember any other music! He was there last night too, looking happy, as so he should, with such a good performance from his missus.

How not to behave in a theatre Part 536

Something less significant but no less terrifying happened at the Old Red Lion in Islington last Thursday night when an audience member rampaged madly across the acting area of Happy New by Brendan Cowell. He smashed up the set, threatened audience members with violence and then ran out of the theatre.

The auditorium was over half full at the time, and it seems that audience members initially thought the destruction was part of the performance, until some of them became an unwilling part of it....

The cast of the Old Red play includes Alfred Enoch (Dean Thomas in the Harry Potter movies) whose parents happen to live in my street, so I popped along at the weekend to ask for more details -- and to make sure Alfie himself was okay. His dad is the actor William Russell, an original cast member of Doctor Who and a fine RSC Claudius to Mark Rylance's pyjama-clad Hamlet.

Anyway, William says that the interloper was unknown to anyone in the pub theatre, and that he left the theatre after his scenographic assault and has not been seen, or apprehended, since.
My suspicion is that the blogger may not know Mr Russell (or Ian Chesterton as he's known in these parts) as well as he claims since I've never actually heard him referred to as William before (Bill or Russell seem to be the names he goes by judging from 352 Doctor Who-related interviews and commentaries...)

Pleasing to see, especially as I'd already got tickets, that the revival of Sweeney Todd starring Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton at the Adelphi Theatre has opened to excellent reviews :

For those of you who haven't seen the stage production of War Horse ( and I would urge you to ) booking for the show at the New London Theatre is now open up to October 2013.

Yep I did The " new " version is very good indeed although it doesn't add anything that wasn't already there. and surprisingly, well to me at least, David Haig makes a very good King " what what "

It does sound good but West End prices... And, like you, I saw the original production which was fab.

This weekend I'm see Complicite's adaptation of The Master and Margarita which has had interesting reviews and which stars the always excellent Paul Rhys (who could be the FutureMrCW if he played his cards right...)

Yes West End prices are getting worse and worse

Mind you on a more wallet friendly front doesn't the next season at the National Theatre start booking soon ?

For those of us who bemoan the fact that it can be incredibly difficult to get tickets for productions at the Menier Chocolate Factory they have just annouced some new membership schemes.
