Thanks faginsgirl, one can never be too careful when buying on the net. :)
If you buy the commercially available Frankie Howerd Collection, I think you get:
Four of the much-loved comic's best shows: Up Pompeii, Further Up Pompeii, Then Churchill Said to Me and The Best of Frankie Howerd, which contains sketches from An Evening With Frankie Howerd and Royal Variety Performances, and chatshow appearances with the likes of Michael Parkinson and Terry Wogan. A few pennies under £18 including delivery from Amazon.

I don't know the website. I wish they had a "search" facility although they don't have that many titles to go through. More important, the overseas postage is very high.
Good luck,
Barbara
Did you try getting a DVD off that Stojo website, Barbara?

I took a look and couldn't resist making a buy. I shall come back if/when goods received.
Two sets of DVDs arrived today. The site was advertising the DVDs as copies of other, maybe personal, recordings. Can't recall the wording and they're having some reorganisation right now so I can't double check.
I thought they sounded pretty up front in that regard; not pretending things were something else.
They did say quality was good enough
They've made their own covers and the discs appear to have those labels made with that funny device. I've done it myself.
They've made the effort without making them look genuine.
I tested one of the discs and the quality was okay...about what I'd expect from a VHS tape from back in the 90s. Assuming that's matched on all the discs I'm more than happy. Complete series of Roger Roger and Spender. Pretty good price too.
As for mailing costs, I paid less than the actual postage cost printed on the envelope for delivery to Canada.

Many thanks BristolUK. I thought they maybe VHS rips and was reluctant due to being ripped off on ebay once with a right Del-boy character selling copied Will Hay movies. Two worked the rest were only good for coasters.. I would have thought that most of what the site are selling would still be under copyright?

There seems to be a school of thought that once a film/programme is shown on satellite it becomes public domain and fair game for anyone to copy and flog.A lot of ebay sellers have this idea.Even though it isn't currently on release to buy from HMV or Amazon,it is still under copyright. Its a gamble.I don't doubt that there are honest(ie.they will actually deliver a watchable dvd)sellers but there's also a lot of cowboys.I've been caught twice, once with dvd delivered but really poor quality, looked like a third generation vhs copy taped from US tv and once where only 6 of the 12 discs in the set arrived and the seller conveniently stopped trading. This site appears to deliver but I'm sure the BBC isn't happy about Spender being flogged without their having a cut of the proceeds.

Then they should release it themselves.![]()
Makes me feel all smug about having recorded them all while they were on the first time around (and not having chucked out the tapes, as many of my friends have with their collections).

I'd feel smug about all the tapes I have...except I can't view the bloody things here in Canada.
Too many to convert and something unexpected keeps getting in the way of equpment purchase to view.![]()

Quite agree. There must be 1000's of programmes waiting for a legitimate release.I remember reading an interview in Record Collector magazine where some bod from EMI was moaning about illegal filesharing. The interviewer asked why EMi and others didn't put the back catalogue stuff out.Because they wouldn't sell in large quantities was the gist of EMI man's reply.RC interviewer pointed out that they were not getting any income at all while the albums/films were languishing in the vaults.
Universal music had a system(CD On Demand) whereby certain retailers could burn a legitimate copy of albums that weren't on current release to blank cd with a basic printed cover for about two thirds the cost of a factory produced example.I can't see why they can't do something similar with old tv programmes/films.

I agree about bringing out films on demand, but if they don't want to do that, why not license them for a modest fee to smaller companies that specialize in that type of fare?
If something hasn't been shown for years it is effectively 'lost' anyway. If the copyright holder isn't interested in releasing the material they shouldn't really be surprised if someone else spots a gap and makes the material available. I'm not condoning it but neither do I condone the suppression of material simply because it won't make a profit in vast quantities. And I'm always puzzled about the rationale of some releases which look to have little interest while others much sought after languish in the vaults.
name='darrenburnfan']Did you try getting a DVD off that Stojo website, Barbara?
Hi, Darrenburn,
I'm glad you asked! I was going to report back but that thread was wiped! What I wanted to say was I delayed the order to see if I had The Borgias series in my collection. But the order is in now, so when it arrives, full report. Memories DVD has The Borgias and is cheaper, but their postage is much more expensive than Stojo, so I went with Stojo. The owner Steve answered me right away so that also encouraged me to put in an order.
I think Didi5 also asked and Will.15, was it? began that thread. Has anyone else ordered from Stojo?
On another topic, I still have to go through all the wonderful Bogarde location photos you've put up. Many thanks and more on that later.
Barbara
Thanks, Barbara. I hope you get your order, as it looks like there could be a national strike in Royal Mail starting next week. The result of the ballot will be known at 12:30 today (Thursday) and it's expected to be in favour of a strike.
