thanks for the tip orpheum- just ordered this, looking forward to it. Doesn't surprise me about the money, wasn't Alexander Walker who characterised the great and the good of the British film industry as a bunch of charlatans and crooks?
I was just wandering around on the Amazon site when i found this book which was published in October. One very good review for this.So i have purchased a copy.I have of course Allan eyles masterly history of Gaumont British cinemas but this book from its review seems to cover much more of the history of the company.I have looked at the company file at the National Archive. It ended in a rather nasty mess.Where the money went no one ever seemed to knwo.

I've just started reading this book which the author very kindly gave me a copy of. It's very refreshing in that it's very much a personal view of the family history, and not academic in tone at all! I must say, I find his bluntness hilarious. You'll need to get it to see what I mean...
...and I finished it. The first half of the book, about his family, is fascinating, and I continually laughed out loud. The second part goes into endless detail about voting shares of companies, so gets a bit boring. Overall, an interesting and easily digestable read!
Having just acquired this, my only comment so far is that it is a really ugly looking book. I know it's a vanity press job but does it have to be printed in large typeface, double spaced? And surely indexes aren't that hard to do?

I dont know why publishers use that size.I am currently reading "British B Movies".Its a very good book but far too unwieldy to take away to read on holiday.Next time i will have to stick to George Arliss's autobiog!
