Would anyone care to recommend a definitive/ favourite book on Hammer Films, studio, stars etc,not a table top book but a comprehensive read, the choice seems endless,I am tempted to go the route of autobiographies especially Peter Cushing.

    Thanks

For a detailed, nay intense, history of Hammer, I'd recommend Wayne Kinsey's first two volumes on Hammer, The Bray Studios Years and The Elstree Studios Years. If you're after a lighter read, then I suggest you try The Hammer Story by Marcus Hearn and Alan Barnes.

The Bray volume of Wayne Kinsey's Hammer series seems to be out of print now. Silly money on EBay, but you can still pick up a reasonably priced copy on Amazon/Marketplace. All of Wayne's Hammer books are way up there as far as the studio's history is concerned.

The companion volumes, Hammer Films: A Life In Pictures and Hammer Films: The Unsung Heroes are equally good and the latter is fascinating!

The definitive Hammer fanzine, Little Shoppe of Horrors, is currently reprinting from day one - or you can get their issues on DVD in PDF format. These are brilliant because Dick Klemensen has been publishing for almost 40 years and has some amazing contemporary interviews from way back. The reprints/PDFs can be ordered via Hemlock Books in the UK.

Another recommendation for the Kinsey books here.

I saw some for sale for £6 in a remainder shop in London a couple of months ago so they may pop up at a cheap bookshop near you...
