I have recently aquired a copy of the 1985 illustrated guide of Film Character Actors by David Quinlan (from Abebooks.com) Excellent and informative as it is, it is surprising that Denholm Elliott is omitted.

Elliott is actually in Quinlan's companion book about film stars. I guess it's pretty subjective which actors to classify as "stars" and which to classify as "character actors".

Never actually owned the book myself, but I recall borrowing it from my local Library many a time!
It seems Marianne Stone is Britain's most prolific character actress (even though her roles were 'bit' ones!), plus there's a nice pic of a young Judith Furse......

I would guess that the most prolific character actor was Wally Patch. He appeared in well over 100 films.I dont think that anyone can beat his record.Just looked at his IMB entry which lists 210.So any advance on this?

Brummie actor Charlie Hall , famous as Laurel and Hardy foil is listed as 270 appearances on IMBD .He certainly made a lot more as an extra at Hal Roach where he was also a set decorator and constructor . Fondly remembered for "TIT FOR TAT "a classic !

I once saw this in a bookshop and thought, "Interesting... must buy it sometime." Needless to say I never came across it for sale again. That's life.
