Oddly enough I was on the phone 5 minutes ago RSVP-ing to an invite to the Melbourne launch of this book, which is to be hosted by actor Geoffrey Rush. It may sound like an odd choice but that actor is quite the scholar of films from that period so it should make for a good night.

I have had lunch with Brian McFarliane a couple of times and he is delightful company and his knowledge and passion for British cinema is second to none. He is interested in delving down deep to find many of the films and personalities that fell down between the cracks or just became forgotten along the way.

I look forward to this book greatly. I can't wait!

It's on my "to buy" list. His "Autobiography of British Cinema" is an excellent book. I envied him interviewing all those wonderful past and present film personalites. I've also been touch with Mr. McFarlane who, thankfully, put me in touch with one of my favourite stars of the 50's and early 60's.

Although Brian McFarlane wrote quite a bit of the Encyclopedia, look carefully at the attribution. Many of them are by contributers. Also, I doubt if he interviewed very many of them - a lot are no longer with us :)

Mark Adams'*Movie Locations - A Guide To Britain And Ireland* is fairly recent and should still be in print. Quite informative if you actually want to visit the locations.

You could also try THE MOVIE TRAVELLER by Alan Foster published by Polygon (Edinburgh) in 2000 at £14.99 in paperback. "A film fan's travel guide to the UK and Northern Ireland"

Gibbie I agree this is an area which I also have always been fascinated by ..

I'm the kind of guy who will take the whole family well off the beaten track to stand in the same spot etc.

The problem is the lack of accurate information available, with even the best of web sites far too often merely advising a location as the name of the town which is hardly what we are after.

So what is the answer can't we all get together and cover our own areas thereby building a comprehensive database ?

That's already been done - on the IMDb :)
Remember that although they've now gone commercial they still have the film fan at heart.

Much of the information on there, especially about older films, is contributed by admirers of those films, each adding what they know in their specialist areas.

Thanks Decks - great site!

And, thanks Steve...IMDb is like movie Yahoo!

Yes Russ that would make a fascinating Website.

It's a great idea for history buffs and filmmakers.

Although the internet is a great place to find out about even the most obscure of British movies, I still like to plough my way through good books on the subject.

I'll kick things of with a book I picked up recently Ealing Studios - Charles Barr superb book from 1977, well worth picking up.
