Default Continental Film Review

Anyone know much about the history of Continental Film Review magazine? I was thinking its deserved its own Wikipedia page, but unlike Cinema X, which I’ve written a bit about on Wiki, I can very little information on Continental Film Review to write up there.

I certainly remember reading it the Sixties. It seemed to suffer from a split personality: couldn't make up its mind whether it was a serious film or a soft porn mag.

IIRC it existed until the early 80s. I remember it well .... it was the only mag that dealt with the likes of films by Jess Franco and Paul Naschy.

Yes that’s the impression I get from the issues I have (mostly from the late sixties-early seventies). It seems to have dated back to the early fifties, and as noted survived till the early eighties (where going with the times it was known as Continental Film and Video Review).

CFR adapted with the times, whereas Cinema X was always a bit sleazy. I remember in the late seventies that the only place Continental could be picked up in Glasgow was at the Classic Grand cinema, they of course specialised in soft pornos.

Continental, apart from the nostalgia value is now essential. research material into many French, Italian and Spanish movies that were not covered in mainstream UK cinema mags. It is without the mystique of Cinema X, and issues can still be picked up at a reasonable price.

Found a bit more info here, it appears to have run from 1952 till 1983
