John Updike's last short story anthology "My Father's Tears". Many of the stories concern the ageing process and confronting death. As he died this year, they are a particularly poignant read.

Just finished 'Adrian Mole: The Prostrate Years'. It's weird to think Adrian's the same age as me and I've followed him from being 13 yrs old.

This latest book is depressing though. Nothing heartwarming in it and perhaps based on Ms Townsends kidney problems and ill health?

I also got Micheal Palins diary volume 2 which I'm really looking forward to starting once the post-Christmas toy assembling has run its course.

I had to abandon James Pur`dy's "Malcolm" at the half way mark, reading it became a chore. Replaced it with "The Lost One A Life of Peter Lorre" by Stephen D. Youngkin. At 453 pages, plus appendix, filmography etc. it may be a little over detailed, but hopefully a good and informative read

The Lucifer Effect, by Philip Zimbardo.

Zimbardo was the brains behind the Stanford Prison Experiment (1971) and documents it in the book. The experiment was originally slated to last 2 weeks but was cut down to 5 1/2 days due to the severe psychological changes among some of the participants. Scary stuff but interesting to read nonetheless.

He brings joy to me.

One I read over the Christmas break:
Numbers by Rachel Ward

Numbers: Amazon.co.uk: Rachel Ward: Books Numbers: Amazon.co.uk: Rachel Ward: Books

A teenage girl in inner city London, a "hoodie" but a bit of a loner. Her Mum was a prostitute and drug addict who overdosed. She tends to stay away from people because whenever she looks into someone's eyes she can see a number - the date when they're going to die!

She eventually makes friends with a black lad and they skive off school for a day out in London. They go to the London Eye and when the girl looks at the numbers of all the other people in the queue she sees that they all have the same number - and it's today's date!

That's just the start of a well written teenage adventure

I am really enjoying, "Edmund Goulding's Dark Victory: Hollywood's Genius Bad Boy".
The biography of the eccentric British genius who directed Grand Hotel, Dark Victory, and Nightmare Alley, to name just a few.

The Wizard of Oz 50th Anniversary Scrapbook. And bedtime reading is the short stories of Saki, which still make me laugh.

I've just started Christopher Neame's RUNGS ON A LADDER (Hammer Films seen through a soft gauze). Bit of a Hammer phase as I have just finished Wayne Kinsey's HAMMER FILMS: The Elstree Studio Years...
