British Cinema and the Second World War
Robert Murphy
Continuum 2000 256 pages Qty
Paperback Illustrated 082645139X
Published Price £25.00 Our Price £6.99
British war films are used here to explore the social impact of the Second
World War: 'the pictures they present - of relations between men and women,
between Britons and foreigners, between members of different classes -
conjure up a society which is beginning to slip from living memory.'
Murphy's study covers the whole range of films made during the war and up to
1960, from Unpublished Story, celebrating the stoicism of ordinary people,
to the heroics of 1950s films such as The Dam Busters. A final chapter
considers the more spectacular and dirtier war in films made since 1960.

I would also recommend Bibliophile Books - Bargain Books Store where you can find "The Complete Sid James" and "The Peter Cushing Companion", both at £6. Also the biography of Jon Pertwee for a fiver, plus other film-related titles. The Sid James book has details of every one of the astonishuing number of films he made, plus radio, TV etc. A veritable feast.
