Elliott is actually in Quinlan's companion book about film stars. I guess it's pretty subjective which actors to classify as "stars" and which to classify as "character actors".
I have recently aquired a copy of the 1985 illustrated guide of Film Character Actors by David Quinlan (from Abebooks.com) Excellent and informative as it is, it is surprising that Denholm Elliott is omitted.

Never actually owned the book myself, but I recall borrowing it from my local Library many a time!
It seems Marianne Stone is Britain's most prolific character actress (even though her roles were 'bit' ones!), plus there's a nice pic of a young Judith Furse......
It is complicated when character actors become stars.....
You need Terence Pettigrew's "British Character Actors" - he's in that
I would guess that the most prolific character actor was Wally Patch. He appeared in well over 100 films.I dont think that anyone can beat his record.Just looked at his IMB entry which lists 210.So any advance on this?

Memorable for among other things that scene with John Stratton nervously being driven along at great speed in a sports car, and him visiting a "Discotheque" with a look of horror on his face![]()
Brummie actor Charlie Hall , famous as Laurel and Hardy foil is listed as 270 appearances on IMBD .He certainly made a lot more as an extra at Hal Roach where he was also a set decorator and constructor . Fondly remembered for "TIT FOR TAT "a classic !
I once saw this in a bookshop and thought, "Interesting... must buy it sometime." Needless to say I never came across it for sale again. Strangler's Web was last broadcast in the UK in about 1989. No sign of it now. BFI's got a script. My interest is the actress/painter Pauline Boty (died 1966), and how she landed her role as wisecracking Soho nightclub owner Nell Pretty.
Who was the character actor with a long, white beard, who appeared in so much during the sixties? He usually played a tramp or similar. It's been driving me crazy![]()
Thanks, Cap'n, but it's not Noel P that I'm thinking of. This chap was smaller, with a white beard which was stained with nicotine (I think). He definitely used to appear as a tramp or someone a bit deranged.
No, sadly it's not him either, thanks. Never mind - onwards and upwards.![]()
Sydney Bromley?
