I once had an immaculate run of the MFB from 1947 to the last issue and when I moved house I thought I'd sell them off, together with an equally large collection of Sight and Sound and Films and Filming. To be frank I couldn't give them away - I tried colleges, universities both here and in the US, secondhand stores, collectors. No one was interested so I must confess that I kept the both mags for the 50s and 60s and threw the rest on a skip. I did once have a complete run of Sequence and sold it - something I now regret as I think that's the only film mag of any monetary value.

Aaaargh! Adrian, I am absolutely amazed no-one wanted your MFB's. I would kill to get hold of a collection like that. I have most issues from 1970 onwards, plus a few from the late 60s, but nothing earlier. When I was at school in the late 70s and I found out that the main reference library had copies of the MFB I used to call in on the way home ask for back issues and pore over them.

The MFB always seems to sell on ebay - I've seen older issues selling for very good money.

orpheum, there are still gaps in my collection for the years I have, so if you are interested in selling any of your issues let me know.

I kept S&S from 1953-1970, arguably the mag's heyday; I kept MFB for identical dates and I kept only the very first issue of F&F. That latter mag never had the importance of the two BFI mags purely because it was never indexed. I also still have a complete run of Cinema (Cambridge); Movie from Issue 1-19; Film Comment 1970-1987, that mag's heyday and Empire 1-54. This much cut-down collection still provides me with some happy browsing on wet and dismal days, though I never, ever, buy film magazines nowadays.

I remember looking on E-Bay and thought, I just can't be bothered, so to save time and energy I used E-skip.

I work for Leeds Libraries and found out recently that the Central Leeds library keeps a complete run of MFB from 1954 (vol 21) until it ceased publication in 1991 when its function was taken over by Sight and Sound in storage, which can be accessed for reference purposes.

If you are interested I can give you details of the incomplete years. They are all in good condition.

Oh no Adrian — I would have loved to have had those. Why did you have to throw them away?

I recently sold off the huge bulk of my movie book collection, and what a great relief that was! I still have S&S 1953-1970 in official binders, and the MFB 1953-1970 in official binders, plus the complete Variety's Film Reviews 1907-1996 (24 vols) if anyone's seriously interested.

Yes, it would have been a herculean task to sell on eBay, though I guess you could have listed each magazine in bulk (ie. as complete runs) and then the only problem would have been posting them! MFB was a truly invaluable publication until it merged with S&S; I would have loved to have the complete run. While I agree F&F may not have been as "important" I'd choose it over MFB for its idiosyncrasies...and no, I'm not gay!
