Am currentley reading a book on the 36 Olympics , which was controversialy known as Hitlers Olympics, which were held in Berlin, know a little bit about it, with the Jesse Owens, story, but other than that very little.

It starts with the bidding, with Berlin, and Barcelona amongest others in the running, and then it goes through the various run up to the games and how long it took to get there ie 6 weeks from Australia,/

It also talks about the "Bad Girl of USA, SWIMMING Team Eleanor Holm, who disgraced everybody on board the Manhattern by getting drunk modst nights on board a terrible crime in those days apprentley , she was dropped from the Team even tho, she was the regining champion at the La games in 32 (what else did they exepct her to do then, sit in her cabin and knit all night long

It also interviews one of the very few survivors from 36 Margaret Lambert(formally Gretel Bergmann) who was not selected by the Germans for being a jew

Some classic if unbelivable quotes from the Games to

The German nation provided the World with its willingness to co operate in Large international projects desgined to further international peace - Josef Goebbels

Fasinating book to read as i knknew nothing of this before

Leni Riefenstahl's film Olympiad is a filmed preservation of the 1936 Olympics; it is both shameless propaganda and a masterpiece. It is a record of the world's finest young athletes just a few years before the war.

It was commissioned as a sales presentation for Hitler's Germany and especially Berlin - but the film covers all of the athletes and turns into a tribute to them instead.

I have read a book on this topic.I think it was "Hitlers Olympics".The country that comes out worse than Germany for its racist policies and anti semitism is the USA.What went on there prior to the Olympics is almost unbelievable.

There is also the Reifenstahl movie... Was it Triumph of the Will? Or was that another one? I remember watching it on TV once. I remember Adolf didn't turn up for Jesses' medal ceremony(s)........... But then as Orpheum reminds me, Muhammed Ali wasn't overly chuffed about the meaning of his Olympic medal, thirty years later, either....

Lest we forget the England stance around that time:

Jesse Owens said that Hitler didn't snub him - they did wave at each other but Hitler only shook hands with German athletes . However Roosevelt didn't even get that far - no telegram or invitation to the White House was forthcoming.

That's England giving the Nazi salute there?........tut tut.........I was under the impression that when in a foreign country you only made formal gestures that were appropriate to your own nationality.

The FA were pressured by the Foreign Office into that gesture.Remember that this match took place at the height of appeasement.Incidentally a lesser known game took place at White Hart Lane in 1934.I have read the security files at the National Archive.it is very enlightening to see the steps that they had to take to avoid public disorder.Worth a read to anyone interested in the topic.
