David Peace, author, RED RIDING and THE DAMNED UNITED, was interviewed in The Times (25/07/09) by Damian Whitworth:
Human beings in a state of defeat fascinate him.
"People say, 'Why did you write about the worst 44 days in Brian Clough's life?'
Well the reasons I did - and it's the same with all the books - is that I have to be able to empathise with a character. And I have never won the European Cup but I have done some really bad jobs and worked with people I didn't like and didn't like me and that was the way into his mind.
"I think English people, particularly, prefer moments of despair."
