    Pearl Harbor Attack announcement

Internet Archive: Free Download: Pearl Harbor Attack announcement <--- link

( as a side note , December 7th was a Sunday. Saturday nights typically hosted a battle of the bands between different ships crews , the Arizona had come in 2nd place , and the reward was an extra hour in bed for the crew. 8.00 am instead

    of 7.00 am.

this explains why so many where trapped in their sleeping quarters.

At 7:52 the Japanese began their attack.

The Battleship was bombed and its front ammunition supply exploded. The ship sank in only 19 minutes taking 1,177 men to their deaths.

After the attack, the surviving members of the other ships bands agreed unanimously to award the Battle of the Bands trophy to Band No.22, and further to retire the trophy. It is now on display at the USS Arizona Memorial.

    ( Band 22 was USS Arizona's musicians )

9 O-clock in the evening was the time the family gathered around the wireless in the back room, windows with thick blackout curtains drawn, granddad in his chair by the set, the rest seated around the table with a cup of tea; I was ordered to be quiet before I even opened my mouth! The war news of the day was broadcast which cheered or depressed the grown-ups. The time was never missed, a sort of ceremony within the family. Remember some of the younger ones, my cousins and uncles, were away fighting so there were ears pricked at news from certain theatres of the war, in fact they followed the progress of almost every young man in the forces who lived in the street as such news was shared daily as letters from 'my Terry or Freddy etc. was recounted. My own father was in hospital getting his mind back together after Dunkirk. Luckily for me, my understanding of the situation was not that good until we started to turn the tide. But, returning to the broadcasts, it was the news reader, was it John Snagg? with his characteristic voice and measured delivery that made a lifelong impression on me. I can still visualise the group, the garden outside full of vegetables, the air raid shelter at the end of the garden near the fence for the neighbours to hop over. The sky full of white vapour trails, I can remember looking at the patterns they made in the day. Later on it was my job to shout to my mum if a doodle bug's engine stopped.

Yes very atmospheric dark days and good sunny days.

Are there any copies of Edward R. Murrow's broadcasts to America during the Blitz available online? He used to broadcast from the roof of Broadcasting House (BBC headquarters) as the bombs were falling

Yes of course. Point being made before I got carried away was how important the radio was in those days. I saw a mention of Lord Haw Haw. Our family was pretty stuck in their ways and would not dream of listening to foreign stations. I think his notoriety was probably through the media not from ordinary folk.

Absolutely, the radio was everything; you see it in some films, like A Canterbury Tale, where the evening news broadcast is a daily ritual. Cinema too, of course, but less universally, presumably. My mother is a child of rationing - she was 10 when the War ended - so her memories are hazy and selective as yours must be; being dug out of the remains of granddad's shed as a five-year-old when a lost bomber dumped his load on Basingstoke is one she doesn't care to revisit too often....
