Radio 2 tomorrow Tuesday 27th 10pm-11pm.Tim Rice pays tribute to 50 years of this show which started in 1955 with Franklyn Engleman but obviously more associated with Alan Freeman. Contributions from the usual suspects, Blackburn, Hamilton, Walker etc. Should be good.

    Hi,
I remember tuning in to the show when David Jacobs hosted it. He also used to plug the show on Juke Box Jury. If a record was played which would also be on Pick Of The Pops, he would, in a light hearted manner, inform us that we could hear the record again later that night, if we tuned in. But I must admit, most people associate the programme with Alan Freeman. But I did not know Franklyn Engleman was originally the host.

    Alan French.

Nor me, I also thought David Jacobs was the first host, but I'm quoting according to the Radio Times.

One of the many useless factoids I've learned from perusing Molly Weir's autobiographies is that Franklyn Engleman was known in the biz as 'Jingle', though whether this is because he was a purveyor of muzak to the masses, I know not

    Hi,
I regret that I missed the opening because I dozed off. But I caught most of it.

With regard to Mozart and Chopin. I was a young person in the 1950's. I liked music in general and fell in love with rock 'n' roll when it hit us smack bang. It is a love affair that is still with me.

We were taught about music at school. But it did not stop me from liking the rock 'n' roll and skiffle. There was a situation in the 1980's when I was doing some entertaining whilst in a charitabe mood. A schoolteacher of my past was present and was surprised. She said, 'Oh! Alan! How could you, when you were you were taught how to appreciate good music?' One of my headmasters was there as well.

But as far as Alan Freeman was concerned, I was impressed with his style of presentation, and paticularly his timing when giving us the chart details while his signature tune was played in the background.

Here is one Alan thanking another Alan. Thankyou.

    Alan French.

I've just heard the programme on repeat and was thrilled. They kept using a computer effect which I'm proud to say I did for Fluff at Luxy using a milk bottle, comb and other bits and pieces. I've often said I'd like a quid for every time it was used and it was used many times. Never realising it would be part of radio history, I never kept a copy and posted earlier that I wish I had.
My background is that I did all Fluff's shows on Radio Luxembourg and we became firm friends (hence my recording the F/X for his show), He was also 'Best Man' at my wedding in 1972. Our friendship lasted longer than the marriage.

    Hi,
I am impressed. I think you should have been in the documentary.

Yes I do wadey, but since it was classical it had a very different audience. With respect I don't think any classical posters would have found their way here.
