This sounds interesting. Sunday (tomorrow) afternoon at 4.30pm-5.00pm on Radio 4. Spikes daughters discuss how his poetry helped him with his depression. Unfortunately it clashes with "Cockleshell Heroes" on BBC2 but there's always I Player or Sky Plus.
I have a book of Spikes poetry, and it is truely beautiful. Here is one of his.
Indian Boyhood
What happened to the boy I was?
Why did he run away?
And leave me old and thinking, like
There'd been no yesterday?
What happened then?
Was I that boy?
Who laughed and swam in the bund*
Is there no going back?
No recompense?
Is there nothing?
No refund?

Thank you for the lovely compliment Cassidy, but I personally doubt it.
I like this one of Spike`s too, it makes me laugh at the end
Feelings
There must be a wound!
No one can be this hurt
and not bleed.
How could she injure me so?
No marks
No bruise
Worse!
People say 'My, you're looking well
...God help me!
She's mummified me -
ALIVE!
If you like Spike's poetry, especially his more serious poetry, then get a copy of Small Dreams of a Scorpion. It's a great introduction to his writing.
It's only a small book, but it packs a punch. There is humour in many of the poems in the book, but there is often a serious point well made as well
