I am enjoying Don Black's stint on the Elaine Paige Show. I am not suggesting him as a permanent replacement, but a few more appearances or even his own show.

I agree. I like them both, but Don has so many stories to illustrate the choice of music. Let's hear more of him!

A great lyricist! It is about time they had him back on dictionary corner on Countdown.

Lyricist Don Black shares personal memories of John Barry, one of the most celebrated film composers of his generation, who died in 2011.

Over five decades, John scored more than 125 films winning five Oscars, including the statuette he shared with Don for Born Free.

Don remembers his first sighting of “a classy, elegant chap” on Tin Pan Alley, who ate “like a ballerina” and would despatch indebted film producers with his characteristic “Yorkshire bluntness”.

On their music collaborations, he remembers Sir Tom Jones fainting after the sustained end note of Thunderball, and a producer’s dismissal of the “lousy tune” and “filthy lyrics” of Diamonds Are Forever.

Don tells of artistic differences during rehearsals for Billy Liar, and the complete failure of another musical, The Little Prince And The Aviator, which closed during preview.

He recalls a memorable night at the home of Leslie Bricusse when he, Quincy Jones, Henry Mancini and Burt Bacharach had to break up a fight between Barry and John Phillips of the Mamas and Papas after the composer challenged Phillips to hum something by Mahler!

This tribute is sound-tracked by some of Barry’s best loved compositions, including Born Free, Out Of Africa, The Ipcress File, Midnight Cowboy, Dances With Wolves and several of those classic Bond themes.

Listened to it today on iplayer, available for the next 6 days. Very good 2 hours, brief informative chat before the music. Well worth a listen.

Caught up with this today but missed the first 25 minutes or so. Didn't Sky Plus it in time. Loved it, great programme and Don Black relates some great stories. Interesting to learn that Carl Foreman originally didn't want the song Born Free included in the film.
