If I get a rattler I rarely open the package. I just send it straight back for a replacement. It's particularly annoying if you have ordered it as a present for someone and it arrives the day before you have to give it to them. What a dilemma .... give them the rattler of a dvd you think they ought to see, after you've had to open the seal and put it back. Or send it back and buy them something they might really want .

Bats.

I feel the same way, regardless of my good fortune so far... I'm scared of fumbling the disk when opening the rattler's box and either touching its playing surface or dropping it on the floor.

With modern technology... surely the assembly line could get the DVD in the box right...

It's often done by hand on the smaller manufacturing runs.

Perhaps that explains the occasional fingerprint on a supposedly new DVD.

Well at this stage they could put a piece of packing in and the problem would be cured

So far the internal packing contained in bootlegs I have received is as follows bubble wrap, kitchen paper towel, polystyrene chip, loo paper, foam rings from spindles, foam sponge, an innovative lot these bootlegers but in every case the packing has kept the disc in its clip

I think there's a lot of truth in that...

Yes, there is. Indeed, in smaller or larger operations this work is predominantely done by agency workers, packing CDs, DVDs or just putting magazine/newspaper bundles together. It's unremittingly boring, the pay isn't brilliant and sometimes these workers are ridiculously exploited. That's capitalism for you I suppose....

Default Pack it in

No denying some suppliers don't care about this annoying "minor detail" but I think if the Amazon's etc. of the world (or even manufacturers) took this low cost extra step of inserting a small circular pad, or whatever into the packaging,as a routine then customers would reward them with extra loyalty. It would also reduce their own costs buy eliminating many exchanges or refunds, so there is a financial as well as customer service dividend as well... The packaging nous of bootleggers obviously gives them an edge and exposes the lack of imagination of the industry. Like an earlier poster, I ordered the 10-disc set of "The Invaders" recently, based on the supporting photos on ebay, excellent offer price, quality of the labelling and the 100% happy customer feedback. Check out the trouble this guy has gone to making available this commercially unavailable complete series. Joe public values packaging and presentation more than many manufacturers realise.

Forget about packaging and the rattlers... what about the DVD craze of replacing nice smooth subtitles with jaggedy computer generated ones... Grrrrrrr... I can understand it for people not speaking the presentation language... but some subtitles should be there anyway.

Or ever worse... replacing the Ticker Tape place and time subtitles which advance across the screen on 'The Andromeda Strain'... with styless computer generated ones under the screen... leaving seemingly non-sensical black lines appearing across the picture where the stylish titles should be. Now that really irritated me.
