I once worked as a Loans Manager at the old ABC Credit Union in Sydney. The credit union had connections with ABC TV and Radio.
Many of our clients were well known Australian film and television stars.
As anyone in the profession will tell you, most actors never really know where their next income is coming from. A hit television series can be followed by six months without work. Some actors may only make one film appearance all year.
It was always difficult granting loans to actors because they could not always prove that they had a steady income.
Back in the 1980's actors Peter Sumner and Lynda Stoner were very well known in Australia. I interviewed Peter Sumner one day regarding a loan application he'd made with us for $3,000. The purpose of the loan was to pay for his wedding to Lynda Stoner. This news had not leaked to the press, so it turned out that I was one of the first people in Australia to know of this celebrity wedding. Today, Peter could have probably sold the rights to the coverage of his wedding ceremony to a magazine group for a packet. In those days though this wasn't considered an option.
Without going into the clients private details it turned out that I had to decline his application. I felt pretty bad about it too. He seemed stunned by the decision. He had planned to arrange a quick wedding within the next week or two. Due to my decision he had to change his plans.
The marriage did eventually go ahead (without our help) and the two lived happily together for a few years before they encountered problems, separated and then finally divorced.
Dave.
