Default Continuity Cock-Ups Film & TV

Call me Mr Picky but whenever I watch a film or TV series I can't help noticing continuity errors, which are so annoying that it spoils the overall enjoyment of the piece.

The most recent one which was apparent several times, was in the second series of Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads when in more than one episode Bob Ferris' blue Vauhall Viva went from a 4 door saloon to a 2 door one during one scene change.

I first noticed it when the lads went fishing and the car they arrived at the hotel in was a 4 door and the one they went home in was a 2 door. It must have thrown Rodney Bewes too when he tried opening a non-existent rear door, then remembered and reached over the driver's seat to retrive his stuff.

From that point onwards I spotted the 4 door and 2 door car in every subsequent episode and I can't believe that if they had to replace the original 4 door Vauxhall Viva, why on earth did they get a 2 door one?

If i remember rightly ,the Vauxhall Viva was one of the first compact small cars to come with four doors. The first ones off the production line were all two doors ,my dad had one. Then came the four door versions.God knows what was going on with Bobs viva, the colour matched up though ,so they got something right...Take a look at Thunderbird 2 ,it changes shape colour and looses bits from scene to scene..Not the Dustbinmen version...

I SAY THERE BOY!

I saw a cracker in the Saint episode To Kill a Saint, which I was watching last night. In all the location footage, Templar drives a yellow Citroen, and in the studio-shot scenes it magically turns white! Not a problem when it was originally broadcast in the UK in black and white, but the Americans must have been as confused as I was.

If you enjoy spotting "continuity" glitches just watch some of the early Bond films especially "Thunderball" where there are numerous continuity anomolies, though editor Peter Hunt maintains that they are not errors but simply resulted in editing the footage in the best way to convey the story, so we have a scene for example where Bond and Felix Lieter have landed on water in a helicopter and Bond dives down to investigate the sunken Vulcan bomber, as Leiter helps him with his air tank his clothing changes from shot to shot from dark coloured long trousers to khaki coloured shorts, its cited as a classic continuity blooper but Hunt says in the DVD commentary words to the effect of, " originally it was two separate scenes on different days which we decided to cut down in to one shorter scene to maintain the pace of the film, it doesn't matter about the glaring continuity glitch because no one will really notice and the pace of the narrative is more important......but there is always some clever dick who will point it out!" ( his words not mine)
I tend to agree because I never noticed any continuity glitches in "Thunderball" until I read a list of them on a Bond website, James Bond 007 :: MI6 - The Home Of James Bond , and now when I watch the movie they jump out at me and are glaringly obvious however it still doesn't mar my enjoyement of the film.

I was watching Home and away the 1956 film with jack warner .
The lad who played Jacks son called to see his friend who lived in a terraced house. The bay window was on the right of the house ,with the dividing wall between the houses on the left ,but as he went into the living room he turned left ,obviously next door .

I May be getting older ,but I refuse to grow up

The one really bad Bond glitch that I never noticed until I read it on a website is from Goldfinger, and now it ruins the end of the film for me, is the sudden appearance of an (unexplained) dead body on the floor of the plane in the middle of Bond and Goldfinger's final fight.

Obviously, Goldfinger originally appeared with a henchman in tow who Bond presumably kills/knocks out but the henchman's entire role has been removed from the scene (although in a CU of Goldfinger holding a gun at Bond you can see part of the henchman briefly over his shoulder). Again, Peter Hunt presumably took a punt that no-one would notice this and didn't use his crystal ball to think about people freeze-framing home videos. Nowadays you could simply edit the unwanted corpse out via CGI.

One well-known one springs to mind. In 'Withnail & I' when the lads are going on holiday (by mistake...), their tatty old Jag loses and gains hubcaps in almost every angle change!

In Carry on Camping, Hattie Jaques suddenly gains a towel wrapped around her head in the scene where Babs' bra flys orf.

I recall recently springing up from the settee having spotted a howler....but I can't remember what it was now. Old age will do for me eventually.

Default Yellow cars

The answer is of course as mentioned! As is well-known the Z-Cars Zephyr 6 cars and the studio centre-section mock-up were painted yellow as it appears more white in B&W than white does!

I know it's not British but in DUMBO when Dumbo is about to run up and bounce up onto a pile of elephants, his flag which he waves using his trunk changes colour!

Going back to THE SAINT, in one episode a car catches fire and the driver is killed. It is a completely different car from the, I think it was Daimler Majestic...not surprising really but very noticeable.

In an episode of Minder Terry has to pick up someone from the Scrubs. We see him driving along on a dry road, then after he's done the pick up we see him driving along on a wet road.

In an episode of The Avengers called Requiem, Steed is seen driving a red Triumph with his passenger sat next to him in the front seat, he pulls over to chat to the passenger who is now sitting in the rear seat.
