Post BBC television sound distortion?

Is it me or is there a distortion to the sound of the US TV series "Numbe3s", especially the female FBI agent, who on occasion I can only understand about one word in three? She sounds like a chipmunk!

Is the distortion caused by the difference between NTSC and Pal or what?

Have solved it to some extent by using the Subtitles button on my handset. However, on occasion there are no subtitles available.

Talking about subtitling. The BBC news channel uses a voice recognition program that at times is totally useless! Sometimes embarrasing - even rude!

As they say on 'A' level papers. Discuss!

Here in New Zealand we are also on the PAL system and I have a TV set that also automatically recognises and plays NTSC programmes.
Being a Numbe3s fan, I have also noticed exactly the same thing as you have stated. I don't have any problem in understanding any of the other characters so have put it down to poor diction on her part.

Subtitles are fun. Good subtitling is a much neglected art.
I think that system the BBC News uses could be quite clever, it sometimes even goes back a few words and corrects things as it gets more and better context. But it could do with a rude words filter

But no automated system can cope with real names (people or places) unless it's taught how to recognise and spell them all in advance.
