Did he - Didn't he? Surely under the freedom of information act the passport office can varify it (or not).

I think that's the most likely explanation for all of this. Where was it first reported? The Daily Hate Mail?

It wasn't in the press though. It was Bill Kenwright in a Radio 2 interview. Steele supposedly has confirmed it.

Not in London, even back then. In the 1960s I'd walk down Oxford Street and the only people I'd hear speaking English were the "Del Boy" types doing the Find the Lady games or selling things out of suitcases

From that web site...
"In a note passed to the Daily Mail, Steele said ..."
So yes, we can believe that

Tommy wasn't all that well known even in England in 1958.

The Wikipedia page about Tommy says of this story:
Lamar Fike, a former member of the Memphis Mafia, who lived with Presley at the time, has posted a claim on www.elvisinfonet.com that it was him, not Presley who visited London and Tommy Steele for a day in 1958.

Note that it's only the Daily Wail that's claimed Tommy has confirmed this. Has nobody else phoned him and asked him?

By 1958 Tommy had had 11 top twenty singles hits, including his Number One hit "Singing The Blues" in 1956 and he'd had a film made about his life, "The Tommy Steele Story", released in 1957. Not bad for a little known artist.

Excuse my Bermondsey, but what a load of old cobblers. Does anyone seriously think this could have happened ? Hopefully not. Elvis biographer Peter Guralnick, would surely think us all idiots.
