Why is it so unlikely? Can even the most fanatic Elvis fans account for every single 48 hour epriod in his life. Heaven knows, I have an extremely dull existence but I wouldn't like to think that my future biographers () could account for every single 48 hour period in my life including that time I took a three day sickie in 2003...

Because, as Paul Merton said on Have I Got News for You on Friday, at the time he was just about the most famous person in the world and his every move was tracked and photographed. Not just by fans but by the press and by photographers.

However, let's not forget that Prince Harry has just managed to spend 2 months in Afghanistan without anyone noticing. I would imagine he's under rather more press scrutiny even than Elvis was.

I asssume it will come up in conversation next time Tommy Steele is interviewed so we'll just have to wait until then.

"Without anyone noticing"? They noticed all right, but they were bribed to keep quiet - bribed by being promised interviews with him and other members of his family when he came home

Yes, I'd be interested to hear what Tommy Steele actually has to say about it. Not what a friend of a friend says he said as reported by the Mail

He's probably chortling away with that big grin of his

Indeed, and if he did spend his entire time in a blacked-out limo....who drove it? Who was manning passport control?? Who was flying the plane?? I do think this story would have been told by someone else before now...everyone else tangentially connected with Elvis has written a book it seems...Elvis was the most famous man on the planet at the time.

Elvis reportedly said that he lived in a fishbowl in Graceland , so no way did someone so in the public eye go unseen at an airport terminal either going in or out and Im afraid I wont be kidded , this after all was the most famous man in the World , in magazines every day .

And people would have asked "who's that guy with Tommy Steele"

Taken from the BBC website

By Ian Youngs
Entertainment reporter, BBC News

Two of Elvis Presley's close friends have disputed claims that the rock icon made a secret visit to London.

Lamar Fike and Marty Lacker, two of Presley's inner circle nicknamed the "Memphis Mafia", insist he never travelled to England.

Veteran rock star Tommy Steele recently acknowledged a story that he took Presley on a secret tour of London.

"My apologies to Tommy, but it did not happen," said Mr Fike, who was in the US army with Presley in Germany.

"I was with him the whole time," he told the BBC News website. "I got there two days after he got there. He was confined to base."

Presley did visit Paris and Munich during his 18 months in Germany, Mr Fike said, but added: "Had he gone to England, I'd have been there."

Theatre producer Bill Kenwright recently told a BBC radio show that Presley flew into London for a day "when he was in the forces" and Steele showed him landmarks such as the Houses of Parliament.

In a note to the Daily Mail newspaper, Steele said he "swore never to divulge publicly" what took place and "regrets" that news leaked out.

"I can only hope he [Presley] can forgive me," he said. "It was an event shared by two young men sharing the same love of their music and the same thrill of achieving something unimaginable."

Presley joined the US Army in March 1958, and was stationed in Friedberg, Germany, from October 1958.

His only confirmed visit to the UK was to Prestwick Airport, near Glasgow, where his aeroplane stopped to refuel on his way back to the US in 1960.

I read that and it sounds quite plausible to me. Don't understand all the doubting Thomases.

This is silly though...

"The 71-year-old, who is currently appearing in a production of Dr Dolittle in Woking, said: "I can only hope he [Presley] can forgive me."

How does he expect to be forgiven by a deceased person??? Does he know something I don't know?

Surely, Shirley, (hard to say...) Elvis is still alive? Isn't that a recent pic of him further up the thread?
