I heard a good comedy record on Rusell Davies's programme last night it was one of Allen Shermans parodies, couldnt remember the name of the song but it was about dentistry.
It occured to me that there cant be many songs serious or comic about dentistry, hes a bit dated now but Sherman was a funny guy in his heyday. |

There is also this offering on Amazon.co.uk:
Includes a couple of tracks featuring the late, great Oliver Reed in his 'pop star' career before he turned to acting. "What fresh lunacy is this?" |

The great jazz singer Blossom Dearie has recorded many amusing songs, especially by the composer Dave Frishberg. She has also recorded a song written by Alan Clare the pianist who was a member of Spike Milligans Q Team.
I have been playing a lot of Blossom Dearies cd.s lately and have mangaged to convert my wife, I dint think that she would be her cup of tea. Russell Davies can always be relied upon to play some Blossom Dearie tracks on his Sunday evening show. I think I first heard of Blossom Dearie in the seventies when Peter Clayton would play sessions by her on Jazz Club (NICE!) on Radio Two. |

I liked many of them, and only recently discovered the '2days Monday' a boy at school used to sing was an obscure early record by The Scaffold, which I found at a prohibitive cost. I also liked Black Lace (well someone had to with the number of record sales...) and the many soft records released by Private Eye in their magazines, now worth quite a bit, especially Willy Rushton's 'Neasden' as I live over the river from it (the Brent that is).
Most of the music now seems to be about violence or depressing subjects and seems to reflect the state of society in general at any era. I liked Frank Skinners comedy song about terrorists last night though in The Secret Policeman's ball. It was as good as any during the last war. |
