Smile Embassy Record Label

When I was a kid I loved rifling through the record collections of friends and family and it was inevitable that records on the Embassy label would feature prominently.

Embassy records were sold in Woolworths, they were cover versions of hits by the day sang by session musiciains.

I am not an expert on this label by any means, but I this label was around in the fifties and the sixties if not beyond.

My parents had a 78 by a singer called Paul Rich, he was doing a cover of "On the Street Where You Lived,

This label used to be a bit of a joke between my brother and myself but I recall an arcicle about Embassy Records in Record Collector and transpired that artists who recorded on this label were quite respected musicians.

Anyone else remember this label and any anecdotes please.

They were produced by the folks who ran the ORIOLE record label, and were recorded at Levy's Sound Studios off Oxford Street....Check out this article:

A few years ago I worked with someone who had recorded on Embassy as Ray Pilgrim. He had loads of old stuff and gold discs (for sales of a Beatle cover album in the USA). He told me - an old music fan - how they used to record all the stuff on the cheap and quickly but usually to a high degree of quality.

I remember that you only bought Embassy cover versions if you had little cash, because they were cheaper than the "real things".

Johnny Worth, who wrote nearly all Adam Faith's early hits, used to record them for Embassy - he was a decent singer himself. A friend of mine, guitarist Vic Flick, did a lot of Embassy sessions, as did Bert Weedon, I believe. One or both of them might have been "Bud Ashton" on covers of instrumental hits.
