It would be nice to hear more intsruemantals on there they could have The Shads, Duane Eddy, The Ventures and The Champs, most of these acts have a rich back catalogue especially The Ventures.

Good list there.
Also what about JB7, Stringalongs, (Bristol) Eagles, Outlaws, Spotnicks, Krew Kats (which at one time had Big Jim Sullivan, Brian Locking and Brian Bennett) for a few more.
Here's a number by the legendary Nero and the Gladiators, featuring Colin Green, later of the Blueflames and Shirley Bassey, who was very young at the time........Colin, that is. Monti's gipsy dance, Czardas. Gets very lively after 1.38.
Does Brian ever play anything by them?

Did anyone hear Brian Matthew play a single on the Decca by Billy Boyle on Saturday 6 September, am I to assume this is the same Billy Boyle who was one of Basil Brush's mates for a while. Looked him up on IMd he was in Barry Lyndon as well and an episode of Father Ted.

I notice that amongst all those wonderful obscure gems Brian still plays a few tried and trusted favourites like The Riightous Brothers Unchained Melody a song that I am fed up with. A minor complaint mind you its still a great show and Brian still sounds in fine fettle for 80, God bless him!

Yes that's the same Billy Boyle and I also saw him on stage in "Billy Liar" (the musical) in the 1970s and he was in teh dreadful "Groupie Girl". In fact I am old enough to remember when he made records like the one BM played!

Thanks Mr Cosmo and you have jogged my memory about him being in Billy, he was probably Michael Crawfords successor.

I have got this terrible feeling that when David Jacobs closes his record cabinet for the last time they will replace him with someone trendy. Jamie Cullam I expect.

As I might have said before when Alan Dell left us Malcolm Laycock was the perfect replacement his level of expertise is exemplory.

It will be a sad day when Malcolm packs it in, as Radio Two evoloves there will probably no time for dance band musis from the twenties and thirties.

If they got rid of Russell Davies as well,I dont think I would bother with Radio Two on a Sunday.

Richard Baker and the late Sheridan Morley are also much missed.

No, Roy Castle took over from Crawford. Billy Boyle was Billy's friend, Arthur, though he also understudied Crawford for a time during the 2 years he played the title role.

For me, the biggest Radio 2 disappointment recently has been the departure of Michael Parkinson. Michael Ball is no substitute....and Sunday lunchtime seemed the right place for Sinatra and co, who don't really feature any more.

I thought that 'Parky' was becoming a little frail at the microphone during his last few years - too many silly mistakes being made, and he was gravitating into the same arena that happened to Ed 'Stewpot' Stewart, i.e., regularly stumbling and bumbling over his words.

Mind you, no-one stumbles and mumbles more than Mark Radcliffe - and he's probably in his 40s !

I agree. 'Radcliffe & Maconie' is both amusing and informative, and they play some good music. Mark Lamarr may be annoying in his presentation style, but he's someone who really knows his stuff..even if a lot of it was recorded before he was born.

A lot of the music Mark Lamarr plays was recorded before ANYONE of us was born. I agree,he knows his stuff. Radio 2 is full of DJ's who know what they are talking about.

My mate Rob's mum used to play Bridge and generally have coffee mornings etc with Brian Matthew's wife. Unfortunately no amusing stories or revealing anecdotes resulted but I just had to share that fact with you all.
BM is great on the "Beatles at the Beeb" CD - the fab four obviously really liked and respected him.
