Default Funny radio characters

Name the characters on radio who give you a giggle. Or even some of the names given to them. Like Celia Molestrangler, Sir Fledermaus Bullusage, Seamus Android. etc, from the Kenneth Horne shows.

j Peasemould Gruntfuttock, Daphne Whitethigh from Round The Horne.

What was that character Tim Brooke Taylor used to do in ,"i'm Sorry I'll Read That Again." with the Dame Edith Evans voice.

Also love Major Dennis Bloodnock from the Goons, Eric Pode of Croydon from Burkis Way to Dynamic Living, Danny Ross's Alfie Hall, in The Clitheroe Kid and the fruity tones of Jo Kendall.

How about that character that Ken Dodd used to do on his light programme show on a Sunday lunchtime that said,"Where's Me Shirt.

Not a big fan of Doddy per se but i find that rather amusing.

I'm a big fan of Count Arthur Strong ATM.

He's a relatively new voice but often has me crying with laughter (no mean feat).

The character should also have some resonance for many forum members, being an old-time film actor and musichall act. Try visiting his page and clicking on his memory man act to get an idea.

Count Arthur Strong

You'll either love or hate him.

He's appeared on radio 4 quite a few times.
I'm still waiting to find anything funny in what he does.

I wouldn't say that I hate him. I just think he's wasting air-time that could be used for something good

I not a fan of the Count (though I think that's probably my loss) but I'm very fond of Giles Wemmbley-Hogg (2 Ms, 2Gs)

I think there's been lots of good radio comedy in the last few years - much of it from the pen of the late lamented Mark Taverner (Absolute Power was fantastic and unusally tranferred very well to tv with completely new scripts and themes). One recent favourite was Rigor Mortis which I thought would have worked very well on tv. Think the Unthinkable is good too as is Ed Reardon's Week.

Not just in the last few years. Radio comedy has always been a good training ground for comedy writers and performers. It's cheaper to do a radio series than a TV series - you don't need as many sets or as much spent on the costumes or make-up

A lot of TV comedy shows have started out on radio, usually Radio 4.
Little Britain, The League of Gentlemen, Goodness Gracious Me, The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy and many others. Even some of the many comedic panel shows have transferred to TV like The News Quiz on Radio 4 which became Have I Got News For You on TV

I agree there's always been good stuff but it's particularly good at moment - I think BBC7 has helped because it guarentees a life for a show beyond the initial Radio 4 outing. And a lot of the new stuff isn't designed to transfer to tv which is nice in a way - no reason why radio comedy should be seen as asecond best. Though I'm not so keen on the new panel shows - The Unbelievable Truth is particularly poor, IMO

I've enjoyed listening to CAS. I think he's a throwback to the good old days of wireless comedy. Listening to him you are transported back to the 1950's.
