I saw him on TV last year, I think, on one of those CH4 'your 50 favourite such-and-such' shows.

Not forgetting "Alka Seltzer, Speedy Alka Seltzer - acid indigestion, take it for relief" with 'Liltin' Martha Tilton.
Oh! . . and Brunatex Stay-Blond Shampoo (with the voice of the late Carl Bernard).
I remember tuning in before the official start time (was it 7 p.m.?) and trying to understand what the French bloke was saying before the English transmission began. Needless to say I failed French at school!

I remember Pete Murray as a pop presenter and even as a kid I realised that he was this very well meaning square.

Pete was second only to that other well meaning pop music square, David Jacobs (just how did he get to present Juke Box Jury?).

The drifting frequency of Radio Luxemburg is perhaps a fond memory for many of us as we listened under the bedclothes through an earpiece on a tinny trannie. I remember some of the 1970s sponsors like Christopher Collins cosmetics and Peter Stuyvesant king size fags. The 208 radio shows and the pop music seemed so much more full of life in those days, but then as a youth back then, so was I!
I remember Bob Stewarts Peter Stuyvesant chart show very well. I also recall Tony Prince who got on my nerves. To my mind he was the DJ equivalant of Hughie Greene. I never forget him hosting the tribute show to Elvis on the night he died.

He is now involved with the Weddings Tv specialist channel on Sky.

I remember listening late at night to Luxy when they would close the station before three o clock with a sentimental song by Diana Ross, dont remember the title of the song but the lyrics had the line,"look up to your teachers."

I think it was Pete Murray who, when he started interviewing on the radio, felt somewhat in awe of certain high-profile guests... until someone suggested that he try to imagine them sitting on the toilet. That did the trick.

If you go to 208 It was Great Radio Luxembourg - Home and click on 'Sounds' it will open a juke box on which you can hear a lot of shows and presenters from the past.

He also did a whole sketch about Luxy on TWTWTW, So did Ken Dodd on BBC radio about Horace Catchpenny and Harry Balldis - I still have the tape

My memory of the close down goes a little bit earlier. I don't think Luxy went on as late as 3 a.m. in the 50's. I seem to remember that in those early days the nightly close down was to a tune called "It's Time To Say Goodnight". I think the final verse went:- "It's time to say goodnight, and it's time to close your eyes. In a moment you'll be sound asleep - it's time to say goodnight" This was also used at many of Butlin's Holiday Camps as the closing song in the dance hall!

That was sung by the great Al Bowlly later to be followed by Steve Conways 'At the end of the Day'.

And in early days did they not log on with one of the waltzes from the Count of Luxembourg?

Yes they opened and closed the station with that. If you want to hear a sample go to 208 It was Great Radio Luxembourg - Home and click on 'Sounds' top right - this will open a juke box, then select 'Medley of closing themes'.
