Hans and Lottie Hass. She was so special to my old man. Couldn't see it then - can now I'm as old as he was!

OK all you youngsters! The first thing I ever saw on TV was an ice hockey match. This was at a mate's house in the 50's. His dad was a high ranking fire officer and they were among the first to possess a TV in our neighbourhood. Needless to say it was black and white on a miniscule 9" screen (but the early b/w pictures always had a strange blue tint). Hockey was the worst sport possible to televise - nobody ever saw the puck and the action was so fast that the fledgling cameramen couldn't keep up. That first viewing has always stayed with me. Another early memory is test match cricket coverage. TV in those days only started at tea time, but when the test match was in progress we got live daytime coverage as a bonus during the school holidays, I think John Arlott commentated. Most of my other favourites form ancient times have been listed.

The first TV I ever saw was the Coronation of 1953. At boarding school on a pouring wet day. Just as the Archbishop was lowering the Crown on the Queens head the TV went "BANG" and set fire to the curtains and we saw no more.

My strongest early TV memory is the first night of Space: 1999, which was just the biggest TV event ever (to my 9 year old self). The next series to have anything approaching that sort of build up was The New Avengers, which I was just so excited about.

No it wasn't The Banana Splits - it was a British programme. There was a TV show a few years ago about this very subject and the presenters (who were roughly my age) mentiomned how scared they had been and I remembered I had too..it was just so odd - the equivalent of a drugged out hippie supply teacher singing nonsense at you (which, incidentally - was also a bit of a trend in the seventies.)

The Banana Splits left me cold I am afraid..

My earliest ever memory is a TV programme! A policeman looking through a telescope atdifferent things..
The Banana Splits were a bit crap, the cartoons in between were ok but I am dammed if there was anything funny about that lot. There was also that live action segment, where somebody shouted out,"Oh, oh , chango."

Yes - I remember it feeling embarrassing. You wouldn't think tiny children could feel embarrassed would you..but it used to make me squirm..

I also liked Animal Magic...and Tony Hart.

Kids TV went downhill a few years ago - but it seems to have perked up - theres some really good stuff on at the moment - a programme set in a zoo called 'Roar' which is also interactive on the net and the other one we like is 'Stupid' which is a very silly sketch show for kids.

People here might be interested in 'Chute' which shows lots of clips from older shows - it's also quite amusing.

Thank you! I HATED the Banana Splits! Really hated them. But you say that to some people and it's like you just said you love strangling grannies.

I also thought The Monkees were lame.

There I said it.

I quite liked the Banana Splits, but then I was about 15/16 at the time. At least it was colourful and had a jolly theme tune.
The Double Deckers wasn't bad either, obviously aimed at the US market.
My first TV memories ore of (not surprisingly) Andy Pandy (which I never liked), the woodentops and Rag, Tag and Bobtail. These last two always made me tearful when they all said goodbye at the end. In fact they still do!
What an admission.

Torchy the Battery Boy, Mr Pastry and Whacko! are also early memories.
Edit: Oh, and Circus Boy and Whirlybirds. And Champion the Wonder Horse and...

There was a programme called, 'Why Don't You Switch Off Your TV And Do Something Less Boring Instead'. I think it use to be shown on BBC2 on a Saturday? It was a forerunner of 'Swap Shop'.
