Early days in Australian TV was very American dominated - we had to wait a few years to be exposed to the delights of the likes of Jimmy "Whack-O" Edwards, Richard "Robin Hood" Greene, Miriam "Everybody Out" Karlin and Alfie "Bootsie" Bass.

Earliest memories? Afternoons, after school at a neighbours house :-
Rescue 8
The Whirlybird
Tales of the Texas Rangers
The Gray Ghost
(Moseby's Raiders)
and Friday nights, 77 Sunset Strip

This is war Wilson, not Sainsburys!

Chalton And the Wheelies

Being born in the 70s childrens shows of that period seemed all to be very freaky. Some of them I still find disturbing to watch.

What a successful thread this has been from bhowells. Loads of happy memories.

Now, I have a question concerning an ancient TV programme. Nobody I ask seems to remember that the series "Sabre of London" with Donald Gray as detective Mark Sabre originally featured another actor as Sabre.
Lots of people remember the series, and Donald Gray. The name Carter is a vague memory, but if anyone knows who originally played Sabre I'd be grateful if you could put my mind at rest.

The original Mark Saber was Tom Conway in Mark Saber. Donald Gray played Mark Saber in The Vise.

Tom Conway and Donald Gray.

I think there must have been some re-titling with this series, since I can remember it going out as Mark Saber with Gray in the title role.
I think a British TV company would have baulked at the usage of "vise", which in my experience is exclusively an American spelling with the meaning of "grip".
Incidentally, much was made of Donald Gray's role in the press, mainly due to his being a one-armed action hero and real-life war hero to boot.
My memory is of him driving an open sports car which he steered by putting his arm through the spokes of the steering-wheel, which also enabled him to change gear.
That would be three points and a fine these days!

PS. That would kept him occupied had he also been cabbing and suffering from pubic lice.

You're right Jackdaw .... when Tom Conway left the role (his was a US series) the UK series Saber of London was re-titled The Vise:Mark Saber and broadcast in the US under that title as the 3rd and 4th series of the original Conway show.

The series had several different titles ...

Detective's Diary (USA) (rerun title)
Saber of London (UK title)
The Vise:Mark Saber (USA) (third and fourth season title)
Uncovered (syndication title)
Mark Saber (original US title)

Thanks Bats - all I needed to know - I didn't realise that the Tom Conway series was US made. In fact I would have never remembered it was Tom Conway in the first series - I thought it was a much lesser known actor. Thanks for the definitive info.
I seem to remember that the programme opened with the chimes of Big Ben and Gray standing on Westminster Bridge with the Houses of Parliament in the background and announcing "I'm Mark Sabre, and this is London". Needless to say as this was to sell in the USA, it was foggy!
I have seen DVD's for sale titled "Mark Sabre - The Vise" and wondered what the heck "The Vise" was! - Now I know.
