Default William Tell

While on the the subject of TV from the distant past one programme I fondly remember is “William Tell” starring Conrad Phillips in the title role. The lyric of the theme song, sung by the marvellous David Whitfield, was set to the tune of the William Tell Overture and was very stirring.
To my child’s eye the actor who played Landburgher Gessler (the “baddie” in the series) was the most impossibly large person I had ever seen!

What a day, what a day when the apple fell for Tell and Switzerland!

Earliest memories? Afternoons, after school at a neighbours house :-
Rescue 8
The Whirlybird
Tales of the Texas Rangers
The Gray Ghost
(Moseby's Raiders)
and Friday nights, 77 Sunset Strip
Loved all those. What about Mr Sqiggle, Andy Pandy. Loved Robin Hood and the Texas Rangers too. Sunday nights was Disneyland at 6 o'clock. Ah the good old days.

Pogles Wood
Mary, Mungo & Midge
Andy Pandy
Rupert the Bear
The Herbs
The Clangers

I also remember some weird French (or foreign at least) programmes. There was one with
a boy and a balloon or possibly a hoop that he rolls along.

There is one PIF that I would like to trace, it's a countryside one but not the animated version, this is live action and shows people closing gates and following the country code.

"Oh! Pete!"

William Tell, Sir Lancelot, Richard Greene's Robin Hood and Guy Williams' Zorro. There were earlier ones, but their recent releases on DVD have been most welcome.

First time I met a TV was at my aunt's. TV had a huge magnifying glass and the whole family arranged themselves to sit directly in front of the TV screen. I can remember it now, Cafe Continental with Helene Cordet. It was a variety show, Sydney Jerome supplied the music.
