You'll have to accept my apologies for the misunderstanding. btw it's fairly clear I do not consider 60 notes a reasonable charge for a dvd.

When you can buy a commercial DVD packed with extras for about six pounds, I mus admit that charging £10 for something that had been taped off the telly recently is a bit steep. Paying £10 for a copy of a film which someone (such as Aphra) had the wise sense to record eons ago is fair enough.

I do not mind paying someone for there time but once I found I had paid someone for spending time I did not want them to spend (making a pretty case). I only wanted it on a short term basis.

What I was getting at was Harbottle calling it "dirty", and stating he's never bought any show or series that has been unreleased commercially, well i'm pretty sure that a good percentage of members at this forum at one time or other have bought an unreleased movie or TV show from either another member or privately. Harbottle did however finish off his last message with
"each to there own however and if people are happy to do so good luck to them"
which is what should have been stated in his original message instead of making out it was like some unsavoury act.
Then DB7 states in his message
Well if you don't advise admin/mods of rip-off merchants you've only yourself to blame for their proliferation. I've heard that some expect ex-gratia or free discs but that has never been a site policy and these canny souls are no doubt building up a nice collection of freebies. If you don't offer to cover somebody's time and expense you're a tightwad in my book. If it's a film I'm hunting for I'll happily part with a tenner.
I'm sorry DB7 but as the Administartor I had mentioned this to you with regard to a member wanting to charge me 60.00 for an episode of a TV series, it's a while ago in a private email before the forum changed it's format, but you never asked me to name the person. Finally I don't call not wanting to pay 60.00 for one episode of a comedy series being a tight wad! A tenner for a movie fair enough although I'm sure many members here at the forum would think that was a little on the high side for one unreleased copied TV movie.
Oh dear my "dirty" remark was a flippant tongue in cheek comment but feel free to dissect every statement made on the board.

Is there really no difference between purchasing a good print through a commercial release and what could possibly be a scruffy VHS to .15p DVD-R transfer and then being charged shop prices?

The "shop bought" one costs about the same to make, but then you must pay for labour, wear & tear on the equipment involved, rent for the shop etc.
That brings the price up to what you seem to be happy to pay.

When someone has recorded the film and transfers it to DVD for you and then posts it to you, why shouldn't you pay for their time, wear & tear on the equipment involved, postage involved etc.?

Those that create the original "2nd gen" (an oxymoron) can of course spend plenty of time capturing and authoring - but it's raw mpeg/avi's that you can spend days working on due to custom encoding or rare codecs.

15p discs might also explain why I frequently end up re-authoring discs.;)

I don't think I was suggesting people should give disks away, but what is a reasonable charge? A PC DVD recorder is @£25, a decent quality blank disk is @.20p, postage/padded envelope is not high for light disks and time is really not much of a concern as the process is largely completed while one gets on with other things. I suppose taking the parcel down to the Post Office and queuing need to be factored in though (admittedly that could add up to a tenner alone ). As I have mentioned if people are happy to pay I’m not going to argue with them, trading removes all the financial aspects and in my view is more fun though.

Unhappy having problems with a website called 'raretv.co.uk'

My daughter is really into adrian mole books at the moment and i have been looking for copies of the tv series on dvd. Someone recommended a site called raretv.co.uk and i went on and ordered copies of the first two series. A confirmation page popped up after i had paid to say that they had to manually process my transaction and i would receive a confirmation e mail shortly. Well, this was yesterday afternoon, and despite e mailing them twice, i have heard nothing from them! Does anyone know if they are a reputable company ( I am concerned, as they have my debit card details!)

I dealt with them once and had no problems at all.

PS Only once because they had nothing else I wanted.

This was posted by another member in October ....

"RareTVUK was taken over again approx six months ago, before then I supplied them with quite a number of shows for their catalogue, especially older stuff, now prices on the site seem to have risen to ridiculous amounts on some sets and they also charge postage.
Where the owners before were themselves dedicated TV show collectors and traders it now seems it is more like a business venture I'm afraid.
Best wishes,
The Doc."

From my experience, they are very slow processing and dispatching orders but you should get your discs eventually - however that was some time ago, before the takeover (?) described below

I have done in the past .... last time was a year or so ago and everything was fine. Another member has indicated though, that someone else is running the site these days and that things aren't as efficient as they used to be.

Re quality .... I purchased 4 complete series sets from them and the quality was pretty good.

I'd agree with Bats.

Only dealt with them twice, and it would be well over a year ago.

Quality was pretty good on the 1996 series, less so on the 1975 single programme - but that may have been its age anyway.

As this thread suggests there's varied confidence in the site; in part due to its occasional spells of downtime or ownership changes. I presume there's no fixed UK address or names so if you do get let down you've probably done your money.

The Askey, Hay and Formby sets might attract some attention...
