I wish I'd found this thread a couple of weeks ago. I bought two series from Raretelevision.com and both series are missing an episode. I was uncomfortable buying something from a site which only had an email address as a contact and my reservations have been borne out by the complete lack of response to my two email complaints and two equiries via the site's "contact us" form over the period of a week.

My experience with Raretelevision hasn't been a good one. The discs are watchable but poorly edited together with bits missing and entire episodes absent from the disc contents. I'm not happy that when I've raised concerns and asked whether the company has the missing episodes (in the hope that the omission is due to a mistake in compilation) I've been completely ignored.

I won't be using this company again.

There is a woman in canada who sells old british films on ebay. The last time i purchased some she claimed to have sent them out when clearly she had not.I complained to ebay and eventally they turned up.Subsequently i asked a friend in the us to buy discs from her and the experience was exactly the same. She had a 99% rating on ebay with everyone else making grateful comments. It makes you think doesnt it.

Just to chip in, I've bought ~half a dozen discs from raretv with no problems whatsoever. Discs were best possible quality (given the extant source media) and delivered quickly, most recently about three months ago.

However, I did see one series listed on there which I have reason to doubt is the entire thing - just the surviving episodes - which (if I'm right) isn't made clear. That aside, I've been impressed with them so far. Maybe I've just been lucky.

Can we just clarify something, are Raretv.net and raretelevision.com different places ? All i know of this matter is that i have purchased 4 dvds from the latter over the last 5 months and they all arrived in reasonable time and were as good as could be expected.

ps: I have just tried www.raretv.co.uk and www.raretv.net and www.raretv.com and non would resolve into a domain.

I had a few experiences like that and much of the high feedback ratings that bad sellers get is due to people not wanting to "neg" them for fear of a retaliatory "neg" and apparently ebay are changing this soon so it cant happen. But it does not affect me as i have two different ebay identities, which is perfectly legal, as long as you are not trying to defraud anyone. I do all my buying with my other ID, and if i ever get anyone who deserves a negative then they will get it, as i care not about any retaliation on the buyer I.D.

All i have to do to keep my good ratings on my Seller I.D. is to give good service, which means if i get any negs it probably my own fault. A few have tried it on, and i tell them the date i sent out their stuff, "after checking my proof of posting receipt" and i never hear from them again (touch plastic)

The first two were owned by the same person but I think .com has since been carpetbagged. It seems to quite regularly change ownership for some reason.

it seems that the only domain valid to open this site is ***********I myself have dealt with the original owner on a number of trades without any problems, although if you are buying the American based series from this site, be warned that many are in NTSC format and may not work on some DVD Players, also the quality of some recordings are appalling and NOT worth the prices stated on the site.

Default Rare TV

I got a few discs from raretv a few years ago and they always came quite quickly and discs were decent quality for what you expect of the age and rarity. It was the first site I found that had the series 'Supernatural' (1977), which I was so excited about as I never thought I would ever see a series like this. So this started me on looking for other rare titles.

Raretv got in trouble for falsely claiming not to run a commercial site and then for failing to adhere to the Distance Selling Regulations.

The person or people who took over got a little greedy to and thought it would not matter if they started selling illegal copies of titles that are not rare at al and are in fact available, undermining legitimate releases and restoration of such films.

For this reason, it will no longer be acceptable to post any links to their new site.

Hi all,
Doc here. I used to supply RareTVUk with a large number of old time TV series until 18 months ago when everything changed and like James says the owners, first started using it like a business and then offering to sell titles that were commercially available. it's a shame because when it originally started I traded with the owner Dave on a regular basis, he had a real affinity for old time TV.
You all take care
The Doc.
