Default E Bay auctions

I wonder if people leave go of their senses when bidding on ebay.I was interested in buying the 2 DVD set Flags of our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima.It is available on Amazon for 15.98 post free.I have been watching prices on ebay. There is one auction due to end today were the price is 16.00 plus 2.50 postage and another in a few days where the price is 15 plus 1.50 postageLast week i bid on a 1929 film.I was not prepared to go above 10.00 and it ended up going for 18.00 !Finally one of the new Apple i phones went for $1125.Has anyone out there done anything quite as daft?

people go silly on ebay as they are gripped by the must have it factor !!! I can remember buying a dvd for £8 a few months ago which I did not like when I got it so put it on ebay, and it sold for £18 !!! dont people shop around theses days, I certainly check all prices of dvds for the best buy

Has anyone noticed that "sold as seen" is popping up more and more on ebay now? They treat is as some sort of get-out clause if something does not work, and actually state they do "not want negative feedback" if it does not work.

How can a DVD be sold as seen? They cannot get around the consumer legislation by such a clause.Under the Sale Of Goods Act the goods must be of merchantable quality and good for the purpose for which they were bought.

The "sold as seen" clause is one usually applied to the sale of second hand cars and it usually imples that it will break down within a few miles! So I guess if you like throwing your money away or lining the pockets of dishonest people then I can't think of a better way to do so than to buy articles described in this way.
I became dissilusioned with ebay a long time ago, there are just too many greedy dishonest fraudsters on there now which is a shame because they are spoiling the concept for those who are genuine sellers and buyers. I think those who are running Ebay have a moral responsiblity to police and erradicate fraud and piracy etc,and I feel a lot more could and should be done to stamp it out.
I can find all the DVDs I want online either on Amazon or HMV and I would rather pay a few pounds more for the genuine article rather than give money to someone who is making pirate copies that don't work, and as has been pointed out it is possible to simply buy DVDs at a cheaper price than those offered on ebay at regular outlets such as those I mentioned.
Personnaly,I am totally against buying pirate copies of movies regardless of quality and without getting on my high horse or moralising I would have thought anyone who supports the growth and continuation of a film industry would feel the same as Im sure all the members here do.

Whilst i agree with what you say i used ebay a lot in the past and managed to buy many films which were not available anywhere else.Yes i know that they are often poor copies.however the point is that i dont have to wait every 30 years for the NFT to show the films i am interested in.I doubt that the film companies have any interest in issuing these films.

Does "the sale of goods act" apply to individuals selling second hand goods privately or on ebay? I thought it applied to properly registered traders and shops etc? who are selling brand new items.Could be wrong but Im not sure it applies to an auction either which is what ebay is of course, the get out clause is in the description so " beat up old volkswagon with no MOT and bald tyres and broken windscreen at no reserve sold as seen" You have no comeback if you bid and win an item like that because the seller can simply say that he described it accurately and you bought it on that understanding?

The SOG act does apply in many circumstances where you might think it would not, particularly in relation to second hand cars.Any car dealer has specific obligations under the Act.Also Trading Standards Officers have many powers.Just putting a qualification on an item does not exclude the seller from telling the truth.IOf he knows an item is faulty then he must declare it otherwise this is a misdescription for which he is liable.

What sort of films are not available anywhere else but available on ebay as poor quality copies? I don't understand what you mean, are they films that were released as DVDs or videos but not available anymore or films recorded from TV? Im just curious as to the source of the "not available" movies, they must have been available at some point if they have been copied?

The films are either off air copies or they come from 16mm prints.Just to give you an example.Of the films made in say 1930 only a tiny fraction have ever been released on VHS or DVD.In relation to those that havent you either buy copies off ebay or you never get to see them.
