Just received an e-mail from Welcome - Movie Mail UK advertising the BFI Centenary of British Film Box Set for £65, a saving they say of £135 off rrp. Has the following films:

They've all been previously released under the BFI banner, several of the titles originally 19.99 or more.

It's a poor compilation imo - British Transport films representing the 1950s? - oh right.

Shockingly overpriced to boot.

As cally says, nothing that hasn't been available before ..... there was a rumour about something 'special' being in the boxset a while ago. Looks like a rumour is all that it was.

Have to be honest and admit that I've never heard of half of these titles and the price was way more than I would have been willing to afford anyway. From the comments so far it sounds as though I'm not missing too much and its not that much of a bargain.

Well, the three Silent era titles alone retail at £65, and frankly, they are superb; I already have them and are glad to have them and I don't mind having paid full price for them. If you don't think 'Buy 3 get 7 free' is much of a bargain then I don't know what on earth you are hoping for.

It's not just Movie Mail participating in this promotion. Both Amazon and Play.com have sets which are different from the Movie Mail one and which are not just British films.

Unfortunately the BFI seems to have a real lack of interest in promoting the rare films in their archive.I was planning to go to the Mediateque to spend a couple of hours there.I went online to see what titles they have available to view.There are about 2 ,nothing out of the ordinary,nothing that i would dearly like to see.Month after month the NFT programme comes in with hardly a British film in view.Maybe thats why i have not been to see anything at the NFT for 18months.

Huh?? Where were you looking ???....I started to look at their alpahabetical list to count the films they have available, and gave up at 100 when I was still going through 'C' for Christmas....

And that's the way it's always been at the NFT. They have always show a high proportion of non-British films. But they do show some every month, and a reasonably high proportion of what they show is British. Even when they're doing a special season on a non-British director or actor there are always quite a few British films being shown

True enough, some months are more Britcentric than others...and September is one of those months where I wished I still lived just down the road. But The Mediatheque is crammed with British rarities....and free. Why is it that some people just love to bash the BFI and NFT and not even try to understand the legal/financial implications for their demands, yet when something is provided they go out of their way to get the wrong end of the stick??
