Default Play.com

After hearing about their latest big sale I ventured into Play.Com's website.
There were a number of DVD's and books that I wanted to purchase. I opened an account and placed an order that exceeded 100 quid.
Imagine my surprise when I was later informed that due to customs restrictions "Play.com are unable to accept orders from countries not specified on our website".This basically means they can only sell to the UK and EUC countries. Whatever happened to free trade?
I have never heard of restrictions like that before.
To say I was letdown is an understatement.
Can anyone recommend a company like Play.com that holds a large library of Brit films, books, music for sale, that has current 'sale' prices, reduced postage and that ship anywhere around the world?
Or any one of the above?

Cheers

Dave.

Very odd. They don't even sell to the whole of the EU, they won't sell to people in Portugal.
And they list England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as places they will sell to - as well as the United Kingdom
Their list of countries that they will deliver to includes the Vatican - but not Vatican City

They also have an International link at the top right of their pages, which you might think was a bit more enlightened. That will accept payment in US$ or Canadian $. They even give an address in Canada for their North American customers. But even from there they will only ship to the EU (except Portugal).

I never realised they were so parochial.

What about buying stuff from them & having it sent to a friend in the EU (except Portugal) who can then post it on to you?

Steve

It never existesd, Play (and many others) are based in the Channel Islands to take advantage of EU tax laws. There was a short spate of British suppliers sending via Hong Kong based sites but I seem to recall the BPI objected to this.

I've read suppliers are wary of dealing with certain countries because of the high ratio of despatched media that goes missing.

I'm not sure there's the benefits there once was. Play's prices have crept up and Amazon offer the #1 dvd title at the same price. (free delivery too).

Well they aren't passing on any savings - a typical dvd box set price comparison, HMV £49.99 Play £31.99

It's not only play.com who restrict where they sell to - I've lost count of the number of times I've tried to buy goods from America in the "Used and New" section of Amazon only to be told, just prior to checkout, that the company won't deliver to the UK.

I find there are some reasonable EBay shops in the US to help get over this> Some of them sell a fair few new releases at very decent prices too.

Selling from the Channel Islands probably helps people like Amazon to sell region 1 titles more than anything.
