Excellent! At £2.00 per DVD, one cannot go wrong. And for a beginner to Powell and Pressburger, this is a wonderful introduction. I imagine these are the Carlton, not the Criterion ones, but there are some added profiles in the Carlton, so very nice. Steve can give you more precise details on the various releases.

Yes, see The Powell and Pressburger Collection

They are the Carlton, not the Criterion ones, although they didn't include Black Narcissus they did include They're a Weird Mob.

They aren't the best P&P DVDs around, the Criterion ones and the Carlton DVD on Black Narcissus retain that title, but these are a cheap way to discover the wonders of P&P.

But.....Who were Powell & Pressburger?

Cue Steve.

Sorry mate, I couldn't resist that wind-up. You've taught me all I know about the great men.

Cheers

Dave.

No idea. Never heard of them. Could be worth finding out about them though. I do hear a lot of people talk about them in glowing terms

I need to update my P&P stuff - it's all on tape. Is "Small Back Room" included?

Not in that boxed set. But it has been released on DVD by Studio Canal / Warner Home Video (UK)
It's out of stock at most places but there are some being offered by individual sellers at the Amazon.co.uk site. But they're charging a lot for them (£48 - £70)

There's one on eBay for "just" £27 at the moment

No extras, just the film.

I love the film but I'm not paying that for it! I'll just have to stick with my VHS for the time being.

Next time you watch it, as Sammy & Susan go back to the flat at the end keep a close eye on the window. There's what is almost certainly a model of a bird (no real bird ever looked or moved like that) that flies away as they move towards the window.

Have you ever read the Balchin book it's based on? The Balchin book is a very good read. There's another element to the story about a brother in the RAF that was dropped from the film. But the film does stick quite close to the story in the book - even a lot of the snappy dialogue is really Balchin's.

It's always oddly pleasing when a film closely mirrors the book on which it is based. Another example from the same era would be 'The Cruel Sea' although the book does cover the romantic aspects in a depth which would have slowed the film's narrative too much.

Quite probably because there's a new 11 DVD boxed set recently been made available. That includes all the same discs as the HMV set with the addition of Black Narcissus and The Tales of Hoffmann. These are released by "ITV DVD" which seems to be a new trading arm for Carlton.

Personally I do wonder at the wisdom of releasing boxed sets like this. But all DVD producers seem to be doing it. If you like the films, any of them, and can play DVDs, then you'll probably have already bought at least some of the ones in the boxed set, if not all of them, as individual items.

I suppose they are a good thing to buy as a gift for people that you want to introduce to the wonders of P&P (or whoever is the subject of the boxed set).

Did that box set actually get released? I was told by Granada it was not happening.

It's been released and is on sale at Amazon.co.uk and other places.

Maybe Granada were thinking of doing one but gave up when they saw that ITV-DVD (Carlton) were doing one.

Carlton are no more. ITV is Granada.
