I am trying to find the name of a British film about Greyfriars Bobby that was in B & W. I saw it once and really enjoyed it but can only find the newer version (1961) with Donald Crisp. Would appreciate it if someone could tell me the name of this earlier version.

Are you sure that you didn't see the 1961 colour film on a B&W TV?

There was also Challenge to Lassie (1949) which was based on the story of Greyfriars Bobby. But that was American, and was also in colour

Can't help with the BW version you are looking for, but can recommend the 2005 version with Christopher Lee.

Yes its an excellent film with a superb cast, production values are extremely high and aside from a 4 second wide shot with james Cosmo shuffling about in the graveyard at the west end of Princess Street Gardens the entire film was actually shot in my home town of Stirling with the Castle and old town doubling (yet again!) for old Edinburgh!....I should get commission from the Stirling tourist board !

As I gesture, I think they re-named him Robbie! Mary Gordon, with about the only genuine Scottish accent in the film (which I think is tremendous regardless) played his "mum".

I put thread on this site a couple of years ago asking the same question, with the same replies. I certainly remember seeing a film about Greyfriars Bobby in black and white and I'm fairly sure it wasn't a colour film on a black and white telly. I have a felling it might have been 1940s or 50s with someone like Finlay Currie as the owner of Bobby. The dog was not a Lassie type dog but a small terrier. I never did find out the title.

The newer version about Greyfriars Bobby is called Greyfriars Bobby: The True Story of a Dog (1961) with Donald Crisp. There is an earlier colour US version called Challenge to Lassie (1949) also with Donald Crisp, but replacing Bobby with Lassie. There are only two film versions in IMDb based on Eleanor Atkinson novel about Greyfriars Bobby. Check also these two links:

Dreamonalice. I have been on line and there is no other old film of Greyfriars Bobby showing other than the Donald Crisp weepy, Are you sure that it was black and white or the fact that it was watched on a black and white t.v. years ago because it is the only one I remember.

A clip from Blue Peter (unfortunately Blue Peter have got a lot of the facts about the Greyfriars Bobby story wrong).

I suspect the Blue Peter researchers simply watched the Disney film and based their " facts" on that.

Try watching the film on YouTube faginsgirl (Greyfriars Bobby The True Story Of A Dog is one of my favourite Disney films).

You are not imagining it Dreamonalice. I remember seeing the film in question in a cinema when I was younger back in the late '50s early '60s. It was in b/w, starred Finlay Currie, but annoyingly there is absolutely no reference to this film. I have trawled the internet to no avail.

If you ever have any luck please inform me as I have been trying to find this film for years.

So there's a film with Finlay Currie, made when he was a very well-known character actor, that got a cinema release but that isn't mentioned in any newspapers of the period?

I have got two Greyfriars Bobby A - Z Books, which are packed with facts about Greyfriars Bobby (including information about the films based on Bobby's story), there is no mention whatsoever of Finlay Currie (or a film about Bobby starring Finlay Currie) in either Book.
