Eye catching thread title to draw your attention to this Radio 2 documentary on those Top of the Pops compilation albums of cover versions so ubiquitous throughout the 70s.

BBC iPlayer - Even Better Than The Real Thing: The Top of The Pops Albums

It's narrated by the immortal (hopefully) Noddy Holder, and has lots of good bits and bobs and bells and whistles - particularly the reference to Norman Wisdom being used as the model for the "Pretty Vacant" vocals (about 35 minutes in).

And which 70s star with a trademark vibrato do you suppose is compared to Larry the Lamb?

    Great listening.

I've got a shelfload of these, together with MFP's rival Hot Hits cover albums (incidentally for Caroline Munro fans Vol 11 of HH is the one to get!). Great nostalgic trip down memory line.

That's like Memory Lane, but you get there faster.

Excellent show, Rowdon I was interested to hear that a couple of them did actually chart; I was always under the impression that they were restricted from doing so at the outset.

Darn these computers. Doing what you tell them to do, not what you want them to do

Well I know during the late 1960's, people used to ask John Peel to stop playing the songs featuring that bloke with the Larry the lamb voice and it was Marc Bolan during his Tyrannosaurus Rex hippy days with Steve Took.

Yep - it was Marc Bolan.

The only thing in the show that I wasn't sure about was the repeated claim that 'real' hit compilations didn't exist; I thought they did, but were just too expensive.

Another one who died far too young and he'd have surely made several come backs if he was still with us.
