No he was an american - tobacco is a clue but the source of wealth was changed to oil in the film. The chap's wife made only one film (not a mainstream one) but was a star on Broadway.
It's Zachary Smith Reynolds husband of Libby Holman and an heir to the tobacco Reynolds of Virginia.
I cannot find the film, but I am sure that's Reynolds.
